Does not look right. The date appears messed with. This is an incredibly rare date so there are a thousand reasons why a crook would alter from another date.
Authentication/certification is a must!

Gotta agree. Altered 98 perhaps?

Is there any way we can get a magnified shot of the date? I definitely agree that it appears to have been altered. However (and please correct me if I am wrong, I haven't done much with large cents this early before) isn't there a 9/8 overdate? Still I don't think this is very likely; the entire date looks pretty sketchy.

Ah. Did a little googling; the two 9s appear much closer on this coin than any of the overdate photos I've been able to find. My money is on a poorly altered 98. (Although, it somewhat appears that more than just the final 9 has been tampered with. Hmmm.)

It looks as though metal has been moved around to create the all of the date digits.

Coin is most likely not fake (cast or counterfeit), it is just not really minted in 1799.

To concur with others: If this is not an altered date, I shall eat it.

Yes, generally speaking the phrase is "I'll eat my hat"... but I'm fond of my hat.
