Borderline, but I think I'm with panzaldi at VF35. Don't know if the reverse allows a righteous slab.

Someone just threw slabbed AU money at this coin. An NGC AU55 went for the price this one fetched, a few months ago. An XF Details went for less than $400 last month. Especially for scarcer issues in non-popular specialties, prices generally bear no relationship to published guides. Gold like this is a cherrypick market, and in its' market, this one isn't much above a melt coin.

More bullion than collectable but I'd rather have old US gold coins any day over modern gold at melt price + premium.

Maple leafs, Krugerrands, kangaroos, AGE, sovereigns meh!

Give me old United States legal tender gold coins everytime!

Better date but the condition knocks the value down near melt for me. It does look improperly cleaned with XF detail. Now if someone were able to get it into a top tier, problem-free slab it might bring a good premium over melt but it's still a cleaned coin to most people.

I'd say EF-45ish and might grade problem free.

Comparing your piece to the linked pieces is tough. PCGS and NGC saw those in-hand and judged them market acceptable. I don't like the NGC piece at the price it sold for. The PCGS piece looks a bit better but far from great.

The images of your coin still don't allow for much of an assessment so I'm still in the XF Details - Cleaned camp. Based on what I see? You over-paid by $100.

thank you BH, that helps me a great deal

If this is a cleaned gold piece it now allows me deeper understanding when examining future coins in hand. it has zero luster to it and where it is not dull, it is not an AU piece like the others I have purchased.

i have already informed the seller this is on its way back tomorrow
