First off, a warm thank you to CPC for starting this thread. This talk of bug tails had got me thinking of collections past, so I dug out and dusted off my old nickels collection and went hunting for any beaver tail varieties last night. It was a wonderful trip down memory lane of some of the buys I've made over the years and it was great to revisit some old friends I've long since stored away. I did find a few which might interest readers of this thread so I thought I'd list some of what I found.
Bug tails: 1942 tombac, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1964, 1968, 1969, 1972, 1986, 1989, 2000 no p, 2001p. I also have a 1978 with the bug in the tail, and a 1962 and 1989 with either a skinny bug tail or a fat spike. Then there is a 1958 with just the tip of the tail doubled, and while I don't own that one I recall having seen it, and now am looking for one for my collection.
Just to add to the tail varieties:
Die crack off the tip of the tail to rim: 1942 tombac, 1950, 1953 SF, 1954, 1960, 1962, 1964, 1985, 1989, 1994, 1997, 2000 no p, 2001 p, 2002, 2003 OE, 2004
Die cracks running across the tip of the tail: 1942 tombac, 1959, 1968, 1999
As well, most if not all years 2001 - 2012 have various extra metal accumulations and die cracks running through the tail itself, and finally doubling and
Die Deterioration of the tail can occur on many years from the 1940's to the present.
Thanks again for giving me the opportunity to revisit some of my old treasures, CPC!
