I recently sent several coins to the authenticated/graded by one of the three-letter TPG's that starts with "N" and, much to my dismay when I received the coins, the 1914/3 Buffalo I submitted came back as a standard 1914 with a grade of F12. The grade was a bit low but I could live with it, but the 1914/3 is one of the rarities of the series. It is also included in the Red Book price list. Well, I called their customer support and after going through the order number, coin number, etc. I was told "I'm sorry Sir. We don't include that variety as a separate type." Excusssssssse moi! The other three TPG's all attribute the coin, why wouldn't NGC? .... (inquiring minds want to know). PCGS does charge an additional $24 to attribute it, but that attribution turns a $4 coin into a $400 coin. That's my story YOUR HONOR and I'm sticking to it! Silly me! Let there be pics! Very frustrating I had a similar problem with ANACS. I was ranting on this forum a while back because they assigned the wrong variety. When they looked at it again they said they don't include 'that' variety. So, I had to send it to NGC to get the correct variety. More $$$ out the window

Wow, Paleo this is truly disappointing. I don't know varieties on Buffalo's, but that grade sure looks low to me. This makes me nervous about sending in the coins we want graded. We have yet to send in ANY and after this experience I'm a little more hesitant. We were going to use NGC simply because they are a close drive from our home. Sorry about this, when you find something this rare it's quite shocking that the "experts" can't get it right.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that, it's really too bad you didn't know that before hand! Quote: We were going to use NGC simply because they are a close drive from our home. Is this because it will be quicker in the mail or are you hoping to drop the coins off? Because just in case you don't know, NGC no longer allows drops, they have to be mailed. I though about the same thing, my uncle and cousin live in Sarasota and I was going to drop off coins there on a visit instead of mailing them from Mass.. Until I learned here are no drop offs anymore... I HATE mailing coins, especially to a TPG'ed.. If someone working there see's and recognizes the address they can assume the package has value... Easy target for thief's..

I hate to sound ornery here, but it's well known that the TPG's have sometimes drastic differences about what they'll attribute. It's why most Morgan collectors stray from ANACS only after careful research. I'm sorry to say it this way, paleoguy, but you made an assumption and you know what they say about that word. http://www.ngccoin.com/VPSubCategor...falo-nickels

While it does happen its not common for it to happen. They get thousands and thousands of packages without incident just like ebay has thousands and thousands mailed out without incident. Just pay a little more for a better service than first class mail and the chances are that they will get where theyre going

Baseball21- your absolutly right, and I totally agree, is it common for that to happen.. No, not at all. But, it does happen. I've personally never had a problem.. Out of the two times I've sent coins in, but it'd be just my luck if it did, lol, just my luck. I was just saying if it were possible if rather drop off and pick up, just not even take that chance because if its gonna happen to someone it'll be me

TPG's have no code of conduct other than ethical. They're out to get the submission fee and move'em in and move'em out. IMO for a "professional coin grader" not to attribute the proper designation to a coin, is the same as an AKC registered dog being called a mutt. Their only value is to offer an impartial and experienced eye as to the authenticity and grade to a coin.

Quote: I was just saying if it were possible if rather drop off and pick up, just not even take that chance because if its gonna happen to someone it'll be me Lol I agree with that. Id rather drop off and pick them up just for no other reason to save the time of transit for them. I'm probably the most impatient person on earth when it comes to waiting to get the coins back. If I had more money than I could ever spend Id probably use the express option for everything. Recently I started using express mail for most of them to cut a few days off and after the insurance the price is really very similar as insurance is real cheap on express mail. I also figure the faster it gets out of their hands and to the TPG the less chance their is of anything happening.

Quote: I also figure the faster it gets out of their hands and to the TPG the less chance their is of anything happening. This, very much. Considering the sensible alternative is Registered Mail, the cost difference doesn't really amount to much in the grand scheme of things. The fewer the hands who handle the package, the safer you can feel.

Very good point! Next time it's gonna be express/insured. I'm the same way, also very impatient.. I worry the whole time there in the mail, lol.

Forgot to mention I usually use the padded flat rate express mail envelopes you can order for free from the usps website. Never tried pricing it without them, but you can fit basically any style of packaging inside you want keeping them well protected. Maybe Dave can answer this, but I assume the difficultly with getting an insurance refund from USPS would be if they were lost on the way. If the TPG already graded them and they were lost on the way back theyve already been appraised. Logically that should make a payout easier, though nothing is ever simple dealing with the government

We have never sent in for grading yet and have quite a few coins I want have graded. I too am one that has a "clock" in my head running much faster than real time when it comes to waiting on the coins to return home. I swear I think some of my Capped Bust Halves are like "Dorothy" telling me - there's no place like home, mine that is I'm really at a loss to know WHAT coins to send in now, we have a number of duplicates that I want to sell so I can upgrade.. I would just be tooooooo nervous sending them all in at one time

As far as grading is concerned the top 2 dismay me the most. On coins that have a large jump in price from 1 grade to the next they seem to "population protect" given years.
The Morgan 1880 P is a good one to look at. To date "no coin has graded over MS-65" Others are the 1889 O and 1891 O, over the last few weeks I have viewed a bunch of 64's and 65's of each year. It seems when it comes to the difference of an MS-64 and a MS-65 with them is how they feel that day. Grading is an opinion but that opinion should not be based on a price guild.
