I read a very interesting story in CoinWorld magazine yesterday-There was a 64 Kennedy half produced in 65 and labeled as 64-they immediately stopped making them and the workers at the denver mint were ordered to give back the 2 they were allowed to buy. who knows if they all came back? nobosy has seen one and not even the SMITHSONIAN has one so how do you tell if one is real?
there are about 4-5 for sale on ebay but how can they be verified when so few people actually saw them and NOBODY owns one-the treasury declared it ILLEGAL to own one!

I am a little confused - your title says Peace dollar but you are referring to Kennedy halves. Which did you mean - thanks!

I'm pretty confused... Are you talking about 64 Kennedy's made in 65 or the fabled 64 Peace dollar?

If your referring to a 64 Kennedy minted in 65 I don't believe there would be any way to distinguish it from a regular 64 Kennedy... Unless of corse it was a 40% 64 Kennedy.. In other words a 64 on a 65 planchet.

And as far as the "64 Peace dollar" goes.... I don't know about that one. PCGS offered $10,000 to anyone who would just let them look at one but nobody stepped forward.. I have a hard time believing it exists.. And if by chance it does its illegal to own so basically it's worthless.. What's the use of having a coin you can't tell anyone about let alone sell.. You'd be better off giving it to PCGS for that 10g... Lol.

Oh but they do exist https://goccf.com/t/75251&whichpage=1
as for their legality who knows. Since the actual coin is not supposed to exist then is it illegal to make a copy?

What do? I'm still not sure what the OP is talking about, a 64 Peace dollar or a 64 Kennedy minted in 65....

Theres no question that they made 64 Peace dollars but "apparently" none were released, and all were melted down. Or at least nobody has stepped forward to claim ownership of one. But does one exist now? That's not known and wont, or better cannot be known until someone steps forward with one. It cannot be assumed one does exist just for the sake of assuming. Sure we could say they do but without indisputable evidence it cannot be said that "yes, they exist"... For now there still a myth, a pipe dream.

And the Carr coins are not real.. In the sense that they were not minted by the US mint, he used "real" Peace dollars but over stamped them with a 1964.. Owning a 64 Carr Peace dollar is not even remotely close to owning a true United States minted 64 Peace dollar.. Not even close.

But the OP is talking about a 64 Kennedy minted in 65 in the post, while the title says 64 Peace dollar.. So I'm still confused..

My guess would be there are probably a couple somewhere, but we will likely never know with how the double eagles turned out.

Thank goodness they never circulated the Peace dollar again. We would never have had that beautiful Susan B. Anthony dollar.... /sarcasm off

by the time the susan b Anthony came out we were long off of the silver standard. I doubt the 1964 Peace dollar being released would of effected the susan b Anthony. The 1964 Trade dollars would of been almost instantly sucked out of circulation, which from my understanding is what killed them. I don't recall specifics but I remember reading dealers had said they'd pay multiples of face value for them meaning they'd never circulate.
