its a coin that has been subjected to some type of acid or chemical that has dissolved the reeding from the copper core.

I have a 1981 Quarter with similar features. It's worn in all the way to the bottoms of the date.

Terminology....the "rim" is the part that stands up around the outside of the design. Your coin has a rim on both sides. The "edge" is the side of the coin where you would find reeding on a dime or quarter. Your coin has no edge because it has been environmentally eaten away.
