I was just curious.. what's the best Morgan or Peace that you've ever found raw, whether bought at a coin show, garage sale, estate sale, or an inheritance, etc... If you sent it to a TPG what did you get?

Picked up a 1900-P back in the 1980's that I submitted to PCGS about three years ago. Came back MS66. The reverse on that one was a lock at 67.

Found an 1888-O Hot Lips in a lot of Morgans and Peace dollars I purchased for $12 each back in 2009. ANACS later graded it EF-45.

1878 7/8TF AU coin that came as part of a bullion junk buy off the bay. I paid $28 OZt silver x 4 OZ and this was the "bonus" silver dollar that was promised. I am satisfied. Now just get silver spot back up for me please.

I would have to say a dozen or so San Fransisco and New Orleans DMPL Morgans in 65 and 66 were my best. I used to get to pick through rolls at select coin shows from a few high volume dollar wholesalers, I had to pay a higher price per coin, but ended up with some real monsters, way back before TPG's came into being. After PCGS confirmed what I had thought, those were no ordinary dollars, and worthy of being protected and not stuffed into a plastic roll. These dealers were still breaking down US Treasury dollar bags of $1000.00 face in the early 1980's. Cherrypicking wasn't for varieties back then but for quality, I remember trading an 1883-O for two mid unc gold $20's a Lib and a Saint. I lost all of those "rescued" dollars in a home burglary unfortunately, though I did trade out a few and sell some as well. I did get $1200 for one - this was when a choice unc Morgan of the same date might have run $45-50 max from most dealers or show tables. A few reminded me of some of Wyane Millers throw-aways, as he had the set to beat back then.

1893-S, which my granddad probably pulled from his cash register at his drug store back in the early/mid 1900s. Only AG3 but still awesome.

A while back I paid $50 for a lot of 3 Morgans (back when silver was cheap). One was a 1921 VAM-47 (the Zerbe Proof dies) than came back MS63PL from NGC. Flipped it for over $500.

1. Bought a 17 GSA's from a bullion dealer for $155 each, a 1882cc came back MS66 NGC
2. Bought a raw 1887-S at a gun show in Tulsa raw in a flip for $32. MS64 NGC
3. Bought a raw 1878 7/8 on ebay for around $150, came back Strong MS64 NGC.

There are deals out there, you just have to know what to look for...then you might be right 50% or less of the time.

Great stories. Wish I had anything to contribute, but I knew things like this were out there.

My best raw purchases were a couple common date Morgans that came out MS64.

It seems like anything that remotely looks like it might come out MS65 or above has been slabbed already, at least at the shows I've been to.
