I received an e-mail advertisement for a set of PCGS 70s at $259.95. Not sure what the shipping charges were.

I'm wrong on a daily basis but I don't know if I see the right amount of interest in these. Last year presales went very quick. This year all the major websites still have ample supply. From a resale point of view I think it will take longer this year for this set to appreciate.

Stev18 - there are a couple of things at play here... I believe and many others do as well - there is a higher expectation of this set having more 70's than last years set did. (that is based on the W mints history of quality). I also think that this has seen a rise in the sets being offered for pre-sale.
That aside - I think the interest in last years set wasn't all that high - because many collectors were put off by the issuance of the S coin into the coin and currency set - which took away the exclusivity of the coins to the set. This years set - is supposed to remain exclusive to the set.
There is also the fact that many just don't care if they purchase a slabbed set - they bought them from the mint and have them in OGP and are fine with them.

Last year, the presale of graded set was starting at either $220 or $240 (I think), be for jumping to the high $400.... So, combine a higher starting price & with Dough58s's point about the quality, we don't see much movement YET. Once people start receiving the set, check the quality, then send to TPG and when the result come out.... We'll see more action then. @ MecMan: I got the same email, those set didn't mentioned FS designation, my be that's why it's a bit cheaper....?

Probably, but I am of the belief that the FS/ER fad is just that and will not have any real long term value add. I may be wrong, it has happened a time or two before.

I see the FS/ER as a fad also. I see the higher price they get today and wonder why anyone would pay it. What is it they think they are buying, because it has no value other than the price they are willing to pay. It is fluff added by the graders and resellers and nothing more. Who cares that the grader got the coin within 30 days of the release. It also adds to the graders pocket on the grading side - because it pushes people to rush their coins in for grading... nice little niche they have created - for a label - that means nothing about the actual coins. The quality of the coin in the slab is not improved because of that label.

I kind of think the FS/ER premiums will fad, but at the same time I thought it would have happened by now so maybe it wont. The one thing I could see hurting it is in the past you needed the FS/ER to get the special labels which could add to the overall presentation but now theyll do the special labels without them right off the bat.

basebal - it hasn't yet because there are still a lot of naive buyers in the market. They see people charging more for the FS/ER designation and believe it must have some value - so they buy it. So that adds to the belief it is adding value...at the end of the day - it is about the coin inside the holder.
If there was some actual significance to the FS/ER designation - then I could see the added value. Being told it means the coin was sent in for grading with in 30 days from getting it? I fail to see how that means anything. Is there a higher chance it will be graded a 70 - no. It means absolutely nothing. Yet - people are jumping all over themselves to pay more for it - and hope they can get more for it later when they sell.
I think it is just a lack of education that is driving it...

If it was lack of education though youd assume it would be tailing off by now considering its been around quite a while. Even though it doesn't mean anything for the coin itself or even the label at some point were going to have to concede that the market has concluded that it does mean something if the premiums continue to hold.
I mean its been years and theyre holding unless someone can say for sure the premiums have been slowly eroding over that time at what point do we say the market has decided that it has a premium for whatever reason
