Don't know why every topic on Eagles always get down to FS/ER but it does seem to.

Yes I buy FS PCGS when ever available and am willing to pay a premium. I happen to like the FS label I am 68 years old and have been collecting probably longer then you have been on this earth.
I am retired with a college degree. To say I am uneducated is a stretch. Let me and people like me collect what we like and want without labeling US

Sorry for opening the can of worms...... :(

I just got an email notice from USMint that my order of 2 sets on 6/11/13 (supposedly shipping in September) is shipped (expected delivery on Tuesday). Anyone else have similar status change? We'll soon see some quality reports....

wif99 - you don't like my assumptions? I can say your assumption of my age is wrong as well. I am sorry your willing to pay extra for thin air, but it doesn't really make the coin worth anymore.

Uneducated - in regards to coin grading and value - is what I was implying. Tell me what the FS actually means for the coin the container is holding? I have the same hardline belief - it adds nothing other than the label myself - since the coin inside is no more unique than any other 70 graded coin in the same series. The marketing is working with you.

We are a tad OT here but this is what happens when beliefs collide with facts.

Do I believe that a Cezanne painting that sold in 2011 was worth $268 million? Absolutely NOT!

But the facts say differently....

You can believe all you want that there is no special significance to a certain label or grade difference in relation to a coin's market value...the facts say otherwise. FS/ER does increase market value..it always has and it always will (I will give you that the latter is a belief not a fact.)

You can question the intelligence of the Cezanne purchaser but you are doing that based on your beliefs and not the available facts.

No change for me, either. Still processing, I guess.

This thread reflects why I didn't buy any sets. . . most of it is all about 3rd party grading, flipping them, how much they're going for on the secondary or something else related to turning a profit and not for the love of the coins.

I read only a few posts about getting a set to pass on, almost zippo to buy because of the characteristics/artwork of the coins, to fill a collection but a lot about "turn a buck, turn a buck".

And its kinda disappointing for some high quality coins inside a nice presentation that has one of the most remarkable designs in American coinage history on them that were made at a mint known for high quality work.

That ends up being the discussion because of the huge time frame that passes between being announced and when the first person actually gets their sets in hand we cant even talk about sales numbers anymore.

Those of us that do flip here do so to pay for the sets we keep because we do like the sets and look for ways to acquire them cheaper. As far as I know no one here just flips.

Two points. First, a unique work of art is unique. It's one of a kind and the "market" for it exits only while it is for sale. Modern coins graded 70 are a commodity item. There literally tens of thousands of them in that grade, and the overwhelming majority of them today are FS/ER. All FS/ER designation tells you is that the submitter hassled to get them graded in the first 30 days and paid a bit extra for the privilege. Nothing else.

Second, you are factually wrong about FS/ER "always" increases market value. If we ignore ebay, which appears to be frequented by drunken monkeys and a very small handful of outlier examples, there is no difference between coins with FS/ER designation and without. Not when they are originally sold by the big dealers (MCM, SilverTowne, Paradise, etc), not when they come up for auction (Teletrade, Heritage, DLRC, etc), not when price guides are compiled (with the exception of Collectors Universe, which needs to justify the exorbitant FS fee), and not when registry points are awarded by TPG (even they consider such designation meaningless).

Theres not 10s of thousands of modern 70s, theres a few thousand for each pcgs and ngc for the overwhelming majority of them, some have less.

Thats not true either. I havent checked them all but I know for a fact SilverTowne does charge more for the FS/ER.

But why should we ignore ebay? Millions of coins are sold there and it has become a significant part of the market

It doesn't mean anything to me personally, but that doesn't mean I cant acknowledge what it does on ebay and wont bash anyone who does like it

Without having to go through a bunch of auctions just to prove that statement is bogus let's just say that statement is bogus...

"Facts vs. beliefs"

..and how can you not consider ebay which provides a huge market for all coins bought and sold...

I have no issue with someone believing that FS/ER is meaningless (me)..but I do have an issue with someone who can't accept the fact that collectors are willing to pay more for that "meaningless" designation...

WOW .. this thread got interesting today.

For me .. my credit card has not been charged for my west point set .. I have no Email and not change to the status of my order. Still says shipping 6/17.

It seems funny anyone would be concerned that others would be willing to pay more for FS/ER ASE's. But of course they do .. at least when the release is new.

When we are all paying $140 for 2 oz of silver .. is it really that crazy to think some would pay more for what experts are saying is a top grade coins. The only way you will get MS/PF 70 money is to have it in a slab .. with that grade.

As for FS/ER labels .. these make them more collectable ... to those that like/want them. I think most can see that they are Pre selling for around $240 right now .. $100 more than a raw set.

I do think it will take 5 or 10 more years to see if they will hold a long term price ... but that is not what flippers are doing .. they are going after the money that a certain group of collectors are willing to pay, when a product is first out.

I would like to say .. I do not buy or sell FS/ER or even slab coins. But I do understand what they are doing.

When some eBayer bids up $100 for a coin from Paradise Mint, while that very coin sells for $79 on Paradise Mint's website, you have to consider the distinct possibility that a particular buyer is an imbecile and his example should not be followed.
