Good evening gents! I was wondering what you guys think of this 1914. I took a closeup shot of the reverse where there is the only visible scratch on the coin. cheers! Quote: Good evening gents! .. We may not be all 'gents' on this great Forum... It would have gone, MS-65 if, not for the scratch.. I'll take it down to MS-62

Grading companies are a lot more forgiving on gold coins (I don't necessarily agree with that philosophy though).
I would say ICCS would call it MS-62, PCGS would call it MS-63. To me, it would be MS-61...

Quote: i had a hand select graded as a MS64... Who would grade a coin with a big scratch ..MS64? It is as best MS-61/62... it is a great looking coin but, a scratch will will always take away from it... I don't care if it's gold or otherwise. EDIT... Just to clarify, gold will always , or seem to, grade a bit higher, but would you buy a coin with a big scratch whether it be a gold coin or a small cent?

Compare the two coins... which one is better, in your opinion?

Oh I agree, I'm just surprised a PHS is not as good as HS

Remember, the graders at NGC, PCGS and ICCS did not hand select, or premium hand select (whatever that means) the coins... mint workers did, mostly on eye appeal I would imagine.

Moejaber...I've yet to send a coin away for grading, but PCGS just seems to much trouble to get a coin graded. I can't even find a form or anything to have ICCS grade my coins, but from the posts on this site, it seems like it's a better way to go. If anyone can provide personal insite, I would appreciate it.
As for the grade of these coins, I'd too have to say MS61
