Sure looks like a die chip. The thing to do, though, as Dave said, is to try and attribute it as an existing VAM first. Chances are it's either a known or unknown stage of an existing VAM - details like this emerging years later about a known VAM isn't surprising. Dies have lifetimes, and stuff happens.
