Information about American Silver Eagle Coins:

I am looking for the fundamental specifications of an ASE Dollar coin. More Specifically a 2000 Matte Finish. Which forum may I find such things as weight, diameter, composition, strike types (brilliant, Proof, Specimen)etc.? short of buying a US coin book that is... :)

Thanks in advance

Marc D

Which would be a bullion coin no different from any bullion coin from 1986 to present...

One ounce of silver...99.9% pure

CelticKnot,

Good Morning - Actually both really. I have been collecting Canadian Silver Dollars and other Canadian circulation series for years. Just recently took a liking to the ASE, IMHO a very nice coin. I recently purchased a 2000 ASE in matte finish (Raw condition) but very nice. This one is from a reputable well known dealer with a warranty. But still I enjoy weighing and checking all of my coins. It is part of the hobby from my point of view. I have been doing a lot of reading with respect to counterfeit and the famous "1906" fake.

Your 2000 ASE is a bullion one ounce silver coin. They have not made a "matte finish" that I know of but there are also proofs, burnished, reverse proofs and now a set with an enhanced finish here in 2013. They are large, heavy handsome coins that are very popular to collect.

Full specs for your coin:

Composition: 99.9% silver.
Minimum Weight: 1.0000 Toz (31.103 g)
Content: 0.999 Toz (31.072 g) silver, balance copper
Diameter: 1.598 in. (40.60 mm)
Thickness: 0.120 in. (3.05 mm)
Edge: reeded
Mint Mark: none

The Silver Eagle differs slightly from its gold & platinum counterparts in that the Au & Pt coins contain at least 1.0000 Toz of precious metal, whereas the SAE weighs a minimum of 1.0000 Toz total, including the copper. SAEs contain at least 0.999 Toz of silver, GAEs contain at least 1.0000 Toz of gold. The American coins have a guaranteed minimum amount of the desired metal with their production tolerances skewed high to maintain that promise. This is clear incentive for the mint to maintain very close tolerances to avoid too much loss to overweight coins. The 5 Toz ATB coins are specified the same way as the SAEs, with a minimum of 4.995 Toz of silver.
