ModernCoinMart is offering the 2013 set in the same NGC black core (Retro Holder) for the same price as the standard white core. The only different the line "NGC 25th Anniversary" is being replaced by "NGC". You can check MCM's listing or here ( http://www.moderncoinmart.com/silver-eagles-sets/) Note: The NGC black core (Retro Holder) was introduced and promoted last year to celebrate NGC's 25th Anniversary and it has "NGC 25th Anniversary" printed on the bottom of the front side of the label. This black core type was supposedly limited in quantities and ended on December 31, 2012. Their announcements are still on their website: http://www.ngccoin.com/services/retro-holder.aspx with submission instruction: http://www.ngccoin.com/news/ViewArt...Article=2946So, my questions regarding this twist: Is MCM went to bed with NGC for this special treatment? Why NGC doing this? I am searching online and see on publication/notices regarding the extension of the Retro Holder to 2013. Am I jumping the gun or is this bad business practice by NGC? I can understand that the two have extensive business over the year and MCM is a high volume customer of NGC but I don't like the way this is working. Note: MCM's office is not far from NGC. I guess I don't understand the problem? (Your first link isn't working, so maybe I'm misunderstanding the situation).
If it's not branded NGC, the core isn't controlled by NGC, nor are the quantities produced being controlled by NGC.
Are you saying it's possible to easily "counterfeit" the limited NGC holder using the core? Is that the issue?

Its possible that NGC is still offering those holders for bulk submissions.
Its also possible MCM is getting special treatment considering they give them A LOT of business. I also believe theyre close to each other so I wouldnt be surprised if NGC has been actively trying to court more of their business and get them away from using PCGS.
I personally think the black looks better and NGC should switch to that permanently, but at the same time you lose credibility with special products if it turns out they arent limited after all.

Link fixed (just look for the 2013 sets in that page). The problem is the black core/Retro Holder supposed to end on December 31, 2012 (per their announcement & promotion). They had promoted it as a special product with limited quantities and duration. There were no explicit or imply indication regarding they will continue with the black core holder after the December 31, 2012 deadline (for bulk or individual submission). I understand that this is a promotion tool used by NGC; but if they are not keeping their word (just as the US Mint did with the 2012-S ASE) then how can the customer continue to trust them? It would be better business practice if they come out with an announcement that they still have some quantities of the Retro Holder and they will offer to customer with bulk submission (or whatever other customer they choose) and will make certain distinction to retain the special/unique character of their initial 25th Anniversary theme.

Quote: Link fixed (just look for the 2013 sets in that page). It was still broken; adding the right parenthesis to the end of the URL. I added the URL tags ([ur l][/u rl]) to keep that from happening.

I preferred NGC over PCGS after the FS/ER started because I thought NGC was being a bit more conscious with their choice of ER and their policy regarding ER submission. However, with this twist, I have to reevaluate my decision. I may just stick with ANACS. I may sound bitter, because all of my special ASE (2006-P Rev, 2011 set, 2012 set) are in NGC holders.

Well when NGC announced the retro holder they said that it would only be available for ASE and small dollars and only available until Dec 31st 2012. They DIDN'T announce that Authorized Dealers could also slab Morgan and Peace dollars in the Retro holders but that Collectors society members could not. Now it is starting to look like the authorized dealers are being given another exclusive. The ability to have coins put in retro holders after they were supposedly discontinued. I wonder if they will still be able to put the small sized dollars and continue slabbing Morgan and Peace dollars in them as well?

Otay maybe its just me but I was always told you buy the coin not the holder. My humble opinion.

BTTB: That statement always hold true in MOST CASE. Some exception: 1) Sample slab, special/unique slab (such as NGC original black core holder) - Conder101 can confirm this. 2) When the coin AND the holder, together, meet the standard/requirement of the buyer (ie: I want to assemble a set of all RP ASE in PF70 NGC holder, so when the coin is graded PF70 (according standard) then I would buy the slabbed-coin. In this case, I'm not buying a PCGS or ANACS etc (ie: holder specific). 3) When the coin in the holder is under-graded (you want to pay the holder/label price), this is sometime called cherry-picking. My main issue is NGC's business practice.

Another reason why I am glad that I do not collect slabs.

jbuck - I am starting to seriously be convinced that people are just buying holders. This ER/FS label is like a feeding frenzy over a shipping date and now we have TPG creating another frenzy over colorized schemes and retro styling... really just get me the coins already!

If people were just buying holders they would just buy empty slabs. Just like if you were really just buying the coin you would just have the coin and nothing else, no holders, no albums, no 2x2s, no ogp. All that stuff is presentation which is exactly what the labels and special holders are, added presentation to the graded coin.

basebal - the grade is all I care about on the coin. Which is why the other stuff is useless drivel to me. Yes you might resell it in the future for what you paid extra for in packaging - or not - depending on who is looking to buy it. If it was me, then I am going to look for the highest graded best looking "coin" and don't care if it is a black/blue or any new aged other holder. I collect coins.

Its nothing more than added presentation. I dont pay the extra fees to get them on coins I send in, I let someone else worry about the fees. If I like it ill get it, if I dont I wont. I think theyve done a good job overall of making them attractive but some have been duds. The FS means nothing to me but is generally put on the special labels, if its a normal label ill get the FS if its the same price other wise I pass
