Hi All,

I bought this IHC penny off E-bay and just came in the mail today. The coin looks like it has an Oily look to it but when I rubbed it with a cotton cloth on a small area there was no oil or residue on the cloth. Here it is:

I am contacting the seller now to see what he says.

Thank you
John

John,it looks to me like your coin was treated with a chemical conservation product to remove destructive damaging vergis. I would leave the coin as it. Do not rub anything over the surface because doing so will cause hairline cleaning marks which will further damage the coin. There is a fine line between conservation and cleaning.

The coin is corroded. I agree something to stop acceleration.
Hopefully it's stable now.

Some dealers put a slight film of some kind of oil on coins to make them look better. However, since you said nothing like an oil comes off, very possibly that dealer just used sonething to make the coins appearance better. Hopefully nothing will happen in the future on that coin.

Thank you all. I really didn't expect this on the coin. If I had known I would have not bid on it. Now the numismatic value is less because of the oily look. I will be more careful in the future.

It looks to have been played with a bit but you're only out five bucks on the coin. He would've taken the coin back.

Perhaps it's just me, but this seller seems to pop up on many posts about several issues I've been reading through today. Anyone else agree with that? I know they have a tremendous feedback # but just wondering?
John, sorry about the coin.

Just a heads up, I wouldn't advise buying coins with pits like this. In my book, this would definitely be a cull.

By the way, this seller has a ton of funky IHCs. I've been watching them for a while, and even bought one. The seller doesn't have many unaltered coins.
