I was flipping through the ASE section of my 2014 edition Red Book (page 355 if you want to sing along) and noticed that the stated mintage of 2010 bullion ASE's is 374,764,500.

That caught my attention since that figure is almost 10x higher than the next closest annual mintage and up to 40x any other annual mintage since 2000.

So I checked online at the U.S. Mint and they report 34,764,500 bullion for 2010. Obviously someone fat-fingered an extra 7 in there. I went back to 2013 Red Book and looked up 2010 ASEs.

They report:
2010(W).....(273,312)
2010W......29,110,500

Which makes no sense at all. The numbers for 2010 ASEs in the 2013 Red Book aren't remotely similar to the ones reported in the 2014 Red Book. And it appears they mixed up proof and bullion anyway.

Back to the 2012 Red Book, which is as far back as I have on my shelf, and those numbers agree with the 2013 Red Book (also bullion and proof numbers swapped).

But that doesn't jive with what the mint reports, which is 34.8M bullion and 860k proof. So how far can we trust the Red Book for data? At this point for me it's just about pretty pictures.

Rest in Peace

CelticKnot. My red books are 2009 and 2010. There is no information in them, as far as I can see to help you out. Sorry.

If I had to guess in this particular case, the Red Book folks updated the incorrect data for the 2010 ASEs but still got it wrong.

I guess my original post was more one of speculation - how many other inaccurate data points are in the Red Book, a book with tens of thousands of pieces of data.

For what it's worth: My 2013 North American Coins & Prices shows the 2010 ASE mintage as 34,764,500 - they don't show the proof mintage. But I've found errors in that publication as well.

I'm a Red Book collector and have them all from #1 to present. Some time ago I got a little irritated with all the mistakes in that book. There was a post here somewhere about this and many others listed errors they found. I sort of documented all the ones I read on this forum and naturally all the ones I found and sent that list to the editors of the Red Book at Whitman. They not only sent me a ltter of graditude, but a free Morgan dollar information book.
I always tell people if you use that book a lot and want to make it even better, send a letter about the errors you find to the editors of the Red Book.

Good idea, carl.

Still seems a bit silly to me that I need to take this (what is billed as a definitive) reference and tell them where they're wrong. Oh well, such is the human condition, I suppose.

For what it's worth, I certainly do enjoy the book and appreciate the efforts that go into it.

Mine has that same mistake. Hmmmmm maybe an error. The best thing to do would be to shoot them an email so future red books have the accurate mintage numbers for the 2010 ASE.

Not really silly since people do that all the time with cars, planes, shoes, food, video games, etc. In many instances a manufacturer actually appreciates customer input more than people realize.
As an example some years back my wife sent in a letter explaining to J & J about problems with a floor wax. In response they sent an apologetic letter back along with a few cases of their products. Auto recalls in many instances are due to customer complaints.
With books like the Red Book being so full of info, there is always a chance of an error. So helpkng them find them only makes for a future better item.
