I have an 1981 Canadian five cent piece and I'm trying to figure out if it is an Obverse # 2 or #5 or 8/8. I looked them up on the web but they all look alike to me. My eyes aren't so great so maybe it's just me but what distinguishes one from the other? Anybody know?

My eyes are going as well. Bought a USB microscope to hook up to the computer (with its big screen) and it works great! The Charlton picture shows the 8/8 as an arc across the top of the inside of the top hole. If your coin is high enough grade then Obv 2 has the upper lip protruding to the left in more of a triangular shape while Obv 5 is more 'chopped off'. The rounded shape of the forehead is somewhat different between the two and can help you with lower grade coins however it works best when you have both to compare against.

Thanks Kuh_85. I see I put 1981 in my note instead of 1891 but you gave me the response to the correct date. It would be nice to have another to compare it to. I think the face may be too faded to see the upper lip but I'll check it with a 20 X loupe Thanks again. P. S. - I looked in my Charlton 2013 catalogue but only saw one type of 1891 listed whereas Coins And Canada show a number of varieties. It makes it confusing when everyone isn't together on this.

bobberbear,Charlton lists 4 varieties of 1891 in the 2013 catalogue. Coins And Canada only list 3. Neither is complete by any means. A complete catalogue of all known Victorian varieties would be enormous and thus impractical. Are you by any chance using the Charlton Coin Guide instead of the catalogue? If you can post a photo or scan of your coin many members here will be able to help you out.

I have 2 examples here. The 1st 2 pics are Obv 5 and there are obvious re-punches etc. showing. the # 9 has been re-struck over another # possibly. Maybe yours has similarities to one of these? The 3rd pic has on obvious 1 protruding out of the bottom of the last 1 and the 9 has an interesting fill or is it a 9 over an 8? Do you see any similarities with your 1891.? It looks like a small O over a larger O in Victoria.

DEVLEC! Let me first apologise for taking so long to respond to your excellent photos. I've been up to my ears in nickels these past number of days trying to reorganize my collection. This "hobby" is really cutting into just about everything else in my life! As for posting a picture, I seem to have trouble with that. I get it to the optimizer but usually can't get the picture onto the posting. Sometimes it works but most times it doesn't. Makes it very frustrating because I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Maybe I'll give it another try!

I use Picasa3 and then I re-size and play around ~800x800 pix to stay under the 100 max. Always works when you stay under 99 kbs.
Good luck..!!

DEVLEC, that is a great looking coin.. Could you say what it graded? My 1891, I think I'll throw in the garbage after seeing this one...

Just type USB Microscope into the search bar of ebay and then narrow it down from there. Mine is a 2 megapixel from Leuchtturm but it's probably a generation or two out of date by now. I ordered it with a bunch of other supplies from boscastle (seller on ebay or http://www.boscastlesupplies.com/se...t/StoreFront but looks like they're on vacation or something right now) in Barrie, ON. It wasn't the cheapest option at the time but gave me a warmer feeling than ordering from Hong Kong :-). I normally just use it hand-held but there are a variety of stands available if you prefer. I wouldn't suggest anything lower resolution than 2 megapixels.

The top 2 1891 pics in my 4 above pics is graded OBV 5 ..MS 63 .. and the bottom 2 pics of the 1/1 1891 is graded OBV 5 ..AU 58. Time for a regrade maybe. .?..or maybe not..

For me,..AU 58 is the "kiss of death" for a coin. Graded a long time ago,..and sadly,..on any different day,..a slightly different grade. IMHO
