Where To Buy Coins

1---Welcome to CCF!
2---Your location makes it difficult (if not impossible) for most of us to give you sound advice based on personal knowledge and experience.
3---Try to find a numismatic club or society in Norway or at least somewhere in Scandinavia. Fellow members could possibly give you info on good sources.
4---If you have any kind of local coin shop anywhere near you, that would be a very good starting point as a source and for information.
5---Although most American internet vendors will have painful international shipping charges, APMEX is one vendor that has a very extensive inventory. Most of
their prices tend to be high retail level. The combination of most of their prices and international shipping charges will make dealing with them expensive for you.
6---Maybe other CCF members from Europe (or hopefully Scandinavia) will be able to chime in here and help you out.

Welcome and sorry we cant be of more help here in the US. If you hang around for a while you can trade with other members which could be a good option, but I think ebay is probably your best bet until then

Hi Skymetalfenix! Of course there are sites where you can get British pennies. However it's difficult to be specific because I don't know what sort of money you want to spend!

Oslo Mynthandel hold some stock http://www.oslomynthandel.no/store/...ns-mynter/76 but of course the more specialist sellers are in England. Colin Cooke usually has a good range: http://www.colincooke.com/coinpages/pennies.html but you will see from their listings that coins are identified with particular numbers beginning with the letter F. These are Freeman numbers after the chap who wrote a book about them.

Oops. My post was edited. I was saying British pennies are quite a specialised area. If you want to go into lots of detail (like the Freeman numbers) you might want to look into getting a book or two about the subject. And maybe one on grading coins to the British system as, like all coins, better grades will cost you more and you'll want to know you're getting value for money!

And if not, they are quite a popular area to collect, so there are plenty of sites that would probably come up on a google search with inexpensive examples. And as they were minted from the 18th to 20th century, there's lots of scope for collecting!

You may want to just start emailing dealers all over the world. Request a catalog and/or review their merchandise on line. I'd keep far away from ebay at least for now. Some US dealer also deal with coins from all over the World. For example a place called Miller's Mint, lists in their catalog coins from the Vatican City, Uganda and many other places, some of which I've never heard of such as Tuvalu, whatever that is. Try http://www.millersmint.com and request a catalog. Remember using the internet and requesting info or a catalog is free. Nothing to loose by asking.
Also, stick around here on this forum and ask or discuss things and eventually you could have enough posts to buy and sell here.

I live in Australia, but I collect British coins from ancient times.
For modern pennies, probably the best way is to find adealer who has junk boxes of world coins.
I even have a few interesting coins of Norway, covering the last 400 years.

For older coins, I may be lucky to buy them in job lots from auction. Problem is that I only may make a significant opportunistic purchase perhaps only every couple of years or so, when such an appropriate lot may be available. If you go down this track, you may need to scan auctions on line. Not a problem for me, because my collecting scope is MUCH WIDER than just British coins. Such catalogues are are of interest to me, for many other areas of numismatics.

Go to coin shows two or three times a year, you never know what you may find.

Start up a regular connection with a few dealers either in Norway, or in the U.K.
It would be worthwhile for you to do a Google search of dealers who may be of interest to you.


Would you believe, NONE of my coins have been purchased via ebay! That does not stop me from using the 'Net to my advantage, and perhaps half of my collection, which numbers in the low thousands, has arrived through the post.
