Hi,

I'm new to this forum. I've been collecting coins for a while now. I specialize in US, Canada, India and Mexico. I've recently started collecting coins from Great Britain and Austria and recently bought this coin for $80.

1758-George-II-Shilling

Can I have a few opinions on what you guys would grade this coin at?
I want to know if I got a good deal and if the coin is over AU-50 then I will be be looking into having it certified. I personally think it is EF-40 or higher (US standards).

Thanks.

Great tone and nice quality.
The eye on the obverse is the clincher.I would give it VF but I know CGS would grade it lower.

@numismatic biz:

The coin you have shown us in that link has considerably more wear. The eye is more smudged and worn. Some of the hair is worn out and the top crown is worn flat and is missing all of its jewels.

That coin is selling for £150. So what is my coin worth. Did I pay too much?

I grade your coin EF or better
say maybe retail 175 to 200 GBP

coin in link I would grade only VF

so you got a really good deal and a nice coin worth sending of to get graded.

I'd call this one EF, and say you made a great buy. Lovely toning .

Personally I'd be a bit more strict and go for VF. While the shoulder armour is good, there is weakness to the eye and high points of the hair that wouldn't qualify it for EF in my eyes.

£100 (CA$ 150) would be a fair price, so if you paid $80 you got a good deal IMO.

The eye is always the weak point with these.

Well I got the coin graded and it came out at VF-30. Value £100. I was hoping for an EF but I knew it would never get to that. This was an especially well struck series of coins and I still got a good deal (£100 = $160).
