It is hard to tell the grade with the pictures. It looks like it might be the VAM 3 unless there is some doubling on the date digits. It looks like a near date. There are only about 16 VAMs for 1898 so it should not be to hard to figure out with the coin in hand. http://www.vamworld.com/1898-P+Obverses

Watch this coin on ebay and see what it ends for. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1898-Morgan...em46101cca61My guess is your coin is worth $30-$40. ebay is the best place to get prices. Make sure to check the completed listings to see what the coins actually sell for. I would not get your coin graded unless you had a professional coin dealer look at it and tell you it was worthy of grading (Meaning a MS64 or higher because a MS63 or lower would not be worth the $30 fee). Or, if you are needing it in a holder for your own collection. The attribution on the holder would not increase the value of the coin. Your coin is an AU/BU looking coin to me but the pictures are hard to judge from. 1898-P Morgans are not a really hot year for VAMs. Look at buying some 1878, 1889-P & 1889-O, 1887-O, 1891-O, all of these have some really cool vams. If you want to really have fun trying to VAM coins look at the 1921-P, D & S Morgans. http://www.vamworld.com/1921-D+VAMs The 21-D's are loaded with Die Crack VAMs which are pretty easy to attribute using the die crack guide on the page. http://www.vamworld.com/21-D+Die+Crack+Break+Guide

with respect I have closely compared the 2 coins and the one you show has wear on the hair and high points, mine does not. my pictures may not convay it properly but I have now looked at a couple of mint ones closely and believe mine might make 62-65 might be work the gamble might not.

I see broken luster on your coin in the photos. If what I see is busted luster the coin is AU not MS. I have both an MS-63 and an MS-65 in this year coin and based on the photos yours is not an MS-63. I am not trying to be a downer on your coin. The question was what grade. If you put your coin upright with just regular light hitting it, look down at it from around 10:30 or 1:30 if you see a darker hue on the high points ie: "the hair, ear, cheek, eagles breast feathers" every TPG will AU the coin based on that alone its one of the tests they preform. They also rotate the coin looking for broken luster.

A Grade of 62 on this coin I would call a win. Many photos do not show glow or luster in lower grade.
Congratulation on the MS grade

Thanks for following up, serial. Your coin was one of those you'd probably never be sure of from images. Now we know.

Nice piece. I would say that that holder is hurting the luster when photographed. congrats on MS62

I missed this post the first time around. I would say VAM-3 for sure with the date location and the visible die crack on the reverse above the F, wing tip and A M and congrats on getting it slabbed as MS62. What's next on your Morgan list?

to be honest morgans are not a big area of collecting for me. I got this graded to see where it would land and the value of the coin versus what it has cost me to buy and grade means I am losing money. however I have no intention of selling it so I am not really stressed but I couldn't get into collecting them, don't have enough money
