So, I'm at the bank today and pick up two rolls of Adams dollars. I got home, put on the gloves, opened the rolls and guess what? Half of them had the side inscriptions upside down!!!!! Woot! Woot!

Sorry to be the barer of bad news but half of them were upside down because half of all of them are upside down. It's a 50/50 chance when they are in the mint when they get their sides engraved. Good thing you didn't buy any like that though.

The edge lettering is randomly oriented- about 50/50 up or down. When first released, people were selling upside down edge letters as errors when they obviously were not

The new dollar coins have edge lettering on them (see bobby131313's link above) and sometimes the lettering can be read with the face (obverse) side up or with the tails (reverse)side up (upside down). It's by random chance which way the lettering faces. Oddly enough, PSEG (a major third party grader) has officially recognized this as a grading feature: http://www.pcgs.com/articles/articl...iverseid=313
