Hello,

Big thanks to NinaMason - had a trade going (for a loooong time*) with her, finally came to fruition. More than septupled my wheat collection and got me my first silver rosies and my first buffs (really nice ones). They will go in another post. Hopefully she's enjoying the stuff I sent over there!

Anyway, my Wheat cent date set is now coming together - got all the dates from 58' back to 34' and a spattering of dates from 09' to 33'. The gems of the collection are the BU red examples (special thanks to SA4H for providing me with my shiniest - an MS64+ 58')

2 things I'm interested in: More wheat cents (especially upgrades for my current lot) and how the blazes do I clean a steelie?

Heres some pictures:
Red, Uncirculated Coins (Steelie and MS64 from SA4H, the rest a pleasant surprise from Nina):

Date Set (58-34 at top, dingleberries at the bottom):

Dirty Steelie - mostly gunk, looks like a nice toned zinc underneath:

The 'Whhhhu?' coin - I kept losing it in the pile, you can see why. I wonder how this happened...pretty worn on one side:

Very nice Ben!

A dip in pure Acetone would remove the organic BUT, some times this is not advisable on all coins by the higher- ups here. Which I understand why.
To clean a steelie why not. IMO

Acetone reacts with Iron and I doubt its best chums with zinc. Ill give it a shot with white spirit and hope for the best.

Im extra curious about the half red half worn and brown cent, what could've done that? Perhaps it was in a tray or an album for most of its life.
Rest in Peace

Ben, hold on with the acetone until more advice is given.

Ben: That half-red/half-brown was handed to me in change at work and it had a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE chunk of ossified gum on the back (it was only because I looked at the date that I didn't throw it in our crappy change jar!). I took it home, chipped the gum off with an eyeglass-repair screwdriver, and cleaned off the remaining bits with hand soap and olive oil before cleaning off the oil with rubbing alcohol and then applying some Verdicare.

The red surface certainly looked original to me, so maybe old chewing gum is just a really good preserver?

It is interesting that you are in the UK and are collecting Wheat cents

If you feel like doing more trades .. let me know .. there is a GB coin I have been looking for.
