I found this 2004 P Wisconsin State Quarter in my change today. It has no evidence of being the typical copper-nickel layered planchet. It is a solid white metal all the way around the edge. It weighs 5.72 grams versus 5.67 grams for a normal copper-nickel quarter planchet. I'm thinking it is a candidate for submission to a grading service to be attributed as a wrong planchet error. Would it be worth sending in?

The 90% silver coins weigh 6.25 qrams. I think it's more likely this coin was plated post-mint.

I suppose I should have looked at the edge more closely, it appears someone plated the reeding. Probably done to get a roll searcher all excited. I found it while rolling some quarters from my change jar.

Coop (I think) offered a pretty cool suggestion in another thread - look for the "Silver Quarter" thread a little down the page: Use a razor (I'd recommend an X-Acto) to create a slight gouge inside the valley of one of the reeding. It'll be innocuous on the coin, and should expose the plated copper clad layer if it exists.

If a comparative ring tone against a standard quarter results in the same pitch, it would be a safe bet the that the coin pictured has been plated.

And the plated State Quarters strike yet again. (And again, and again, and again.......)

I knew it definitely was not silver but thought it could have been a wrong metal planchet intended for a coin struck by the Mint for a foreign government of the same size and approximate weight.
