Is it common for the mint mark to be filled on the Eisenhower coin?

it could be post mint damage or Die Deterioration distortion.

The strongest reason for the mint mark to be filled is that the post broke off the die that forms the center of the mint mark. These don't spell the end of the dies use. It is just a hurdle in its life.

I guess not.... I checked a few websites and found that the mint mark on Eisenhower dollar should be D (Denver) or S (San Francisco) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eisenhower_dollar. The mint mark on your coin appears so probably because of post mint damage. I would suggest you get your coin examined from a professional coin grading agency so that you are totally sure of what you have is an authentic coin. Once you get it graded, your coin is packed in tamper-proof packaging, plus a grading certificate http://www.meritgold.com/product-de...-1-1921-ms64. They check the authenticity of the coin as well.

Yes it is common on dies in their later life. Like Coop said, the tiny post that forms the inside of the D either wore away or broke off. The filled mintmark is not enough to pull the die so I consider coins like this a die state and not an error coin (but that is just a personal opinion). I would not send this in to be slabbed. It is not worth it.

Another cause of filled mintmarks is the use of a worn mintmark punch. The most common example is the 1979-S Type 1 vs. Type 2 and Denver coins from the 1970s frequently have an indistinct mintmark.
