This is the first time I have seen this kind of damage on a coin. Do you think someone tried to melt it?

Maybe. Looks like a fuse box penny.

Back in the olden days, when you fried a fuse, you could put a penny in the fuse box, shove the fuse back in and sometimes it would restore power.

"Back in the olden days"

You mean the 40's and 50's were the olden days ?

Oh well, I always thought they were the 1800's

I hadn't thought of the penny in the fuse box.

My kids think the olden days are the 1970's. B)

Thanks for your help!

Maybe it had something soldered/welded to it. Like a loop to make it into a necklace or something?

I agree with the loop theory. It doesn't look like there is enough metal missing from the low spots to make up for how much is on the high spots.
Also, it is right at the top of the bust.. right where you would hang it from to best view Lincoln.

Would a soldering torch be hot enough to melt the copper of the penny?
Rest in Peace

I would assume so since they are used to make jewelry.

The scrapes across Lincoln's face make me think it was placed into a spot and then a fuse shoved into the same place. The rim damage is from arcing. (Maybe,I'm just guessing.)

I have never seen a plumber melt the copper pipe he's soldering nor have I ever seen melted electrical wires due to solder, but I do remember the fuse box fixes, and that could definitely melt this coin and any other metal put in there. Just a guess.
