Hi All,

New here. I inherited some Morgan dollars from my father. I have the invoices and canceled checks that he saved from his years of collecting.

On one lot of 8 morgans, they are all marked MS64 in plain coin holders. My dad purchased the coins from Don C. Reeve, Salt Lake City, Utah, and the Reeve invoice notes all coins as MS64.

My dad was very thorough about researching things and I imagine he would have made sure he was dealing with a reputable outfit before purchasing the coins.

But I have tried to find info on Don C Reeve rare coin dealer and cannot find anything.

Has anyone here dealt with this dealer and can confirm his grading accuracy?

Any advice/info appreciated.

Thank you,
Bud

Father's Day is a great day to honor your father's memory with some research.

Is there a date on the invoice? Coin dealers retire, are bought out, and otherwise close up shop frequently. If you can't find anything with a Google search, chances are this fellow has long been out of business.

If you could post some images we could give you an idea as to whether or not they are MS64.

I'm sorry for your loss.

If your father's collection was extensive, then you could assume he knew what he was purchasing and that the grades are about accurate. If those were the only coins he ever purchased....then you probably should try to post some photos here.

If that isn't possible, check the web for coin shows in your area. My local club has two shows a year and anyone is allowed to bring in a coin to have graded by any dealer. You might want to try to get a couple graded at a show -- and you can take the same coin to several dealers at the show -- and they will probably all say about the same thing. Just look around for a dealer that isn't busy.

Yes please post some photos of the best ones you think, and we will give you an accurate grade. Do you have a list do the dates and mints?
Your coins even at MS64 can have massive values in both directions, all depends on the year, mint, and VAM

I performed a quick search on the dealer via Google and the most relevant information I found was an obituary for Don C. Reeve from 2002.

Wow! Thank you, everyone, for the replies and the great advice.

BH1964--you are absolutely right. I was honoring my dad on Father's Day by going through some things he left me long ago. Kind of you to notice.

SilverTurtle--I performed the same search and that is all I could come up with, myself. However, by the obituary he did appear to be a stand-up citizen so, even though it was an obit, it still provided some useful info, in my opinion.

Kman & All, as regards dates & grading . . . yes, my dad was a meticulous researcher and record keeper. I have the invoices, canceled checks, etc -- back from 1988, by the way. On Father's Day, I took the time to go through the collection (yes, it is extensive) and match up the receipts & checks to the coins/lots.

I tend to think you all are right and that the grades for the most part are probably accurate. Thanks for letting me know about online grading here. That sounds like fun. Maybe I can learn how to do it, too. I was always interested in collecting. Did some as a youth and took an interest in what my dad had to say when he was collecting. Some of it I still remember ;-)

Today, I took some photos of two coins. Not the Morgans (yet), but two that I just found interesting. I'll post those in the appropriate thread and will do the same with the Morgans once I photo some. Today was a learning curve trying to get good enough photos.

Thank you to all for making me feel so welcome. I have to say this is one of the friendliest forums I've ever come across on the internet!

Peace,
Bud
