There were a few coin dealers at the flea market this weekend. They all seemed focused on pushing silver maples (at $28 apiece) and jewelry, but a couple had a small box of junk coins off to the side. I left the flea market with my wallet only $0.75 lighter! Ok, I guess $0.73 lighter since I bought these two pennies. I paid 25 cents for the 1936 Newfoundland and 50 cents for the 1854 Bank of Upper Canada. I especially like the two big die cracks under the king on the Newfoundland, one running from the G and another running toward it from the P. So, how did I do? ? ?

Yay!! Thanks!
I'm still learning, but figured I couldn't go too far wrong buying the ones with the best visible details in the junk box. The die cracks were a bonus surprise under the loupe at home. :)

Interesting. Your 1936 NFLD looks legit, but that is the exact same coin that the Chinese counterfeiters used to create their NFLD George V large cent counterfeit coins.... That large die crack is one of the markers...
Maybe Mike M. can share his opinion?

If that coin is the master for known copies, wouldn't it be worth knowing who owned the master previously?

This is a real one as SPP stated it carries the markers of the dies of the fakes with the exception of the die crack on the obv. which spreads to the legend on both sides of the effigy which on the fakes it does not. The coin used as the model for the fake I believe to be a later die state of this coin. :-)

Phew, good to know. I was afraid CSIS or the RCMP were about to come knocking on my door!

For .75 cents, I would say you did real well. Great pickups.
