Gyrene, I think you did well and the album wouldn't do much to the lesser grade coins. I would take out the 38 "S" and put it in a 2x2 flip, hope the other side is the same condition.

I bought a similar set for melt (back when silver was at $32)

Cost a few bucks to fill the empty holes.

Still need a 1916D and 1921D.

You did better than I did due to the drop in melt price

I think you got a decent deal on a good starter set of mercs. If it were me I would move them to an album to protect them better and you can see both sides. Then you should finish the rest of the set. This is a fun set to collect.

with perfessor (and others), nice price, get an album and do the finish and upgrade routine, that's what we do.

Wasn't to long ago people were willing to spend over 3 bucks a piece for any silver dime. Spot changes, won't be long before you'll be thinking "I can't believe how cheap I got these for". I wouldn't worry or even consider the price and of course somebody always got a better deal, blah, blah, blah. We're talking about a few bucks here.
Fact is these are Mercury dimes and usually carry a price tag over spot because they are an all American favorite.

I think you did all right. I'd keep them as is and find some hole fillers. I have seen more than a few 21P's going for $20 to $30 in Good. I also know, as a dealer, that the supply of bullion dimes is starting to dry up. I would expect numismatic values to start to come back online in a couple years. The market was flooded in the last 5 years with all those ordinary ( i.e. non-collectors) selling their spare silver. I fear to many of us have gotten used to thinking in terms of bullion and not book value. Something that will change. Though perhaps not for a year or two.

As for the spot price issue, in the midwest you can indeed get them at about 16 times. But what I don't understand are the comments from people that think that 15 cents each over that price point is a big deal.

I'm visiting California right now, my daughter just graduated from HS, and have been in the North Bay Area visiting coin and antique shops. I found one which sold me some quarters for 16 times. I think, though, that he may have given me a better price because I buy from him when I'm in town.

Btw, I found Morgans selling from $25 to $31 for common date sliders and unc's. These are usually in the with the bullion bin.

Gyrene7483: I would pull out the 38-S immediately. It's very beautiful and looks uncirculated. The problem with that is that the coin is way too good for this set. If this set was mine I'd sell the 38-S separately. Then see if you can acetone the 19-S and 34-D and get that ugly stuff off of them . . . if not then they need to be replaced. Then just fill up the holes and with everything else minus the 16-D and you've got a nice junk silver plus set of Mercury dimes you can sell or trade for something better.
