Today I got a nearly complete set of well traveled Mercury dimes in the No. 9014 blue Whitman folder. It is missing eleven pieces including of course the 1916-D. The others whose holes are unoccupied are 1917 D & S, 1919 D, 1921 P & D, 1924-S, 1925-D, 1926 P & S, 1928-S and 1931-D. Grades range from less than good to XF except for the 1938-S which looks uncirculated. The 1934-D mint mark is the same size as the years just before and after and the 1941-S mint mark matches the 1938 to 1940 mint mark size but is noticeably smaller than the 1942 and later mint marks. The Red Book states two mint mark sizes for the 34-D and 41-S but which is the scarcer size it doesn't specify. I offered him $1.75 each ($115.50) for the 66 coins in the album which I thought was fair enough considering I just saved a lot of time and effort in acquiring these dimes individually and he accepted. Now what do I do with it? Pop them out and add them to my 90% stash or finish it? The pair of 1921's needed will cost about $200.00 or so in good. I don't need to decide right away so for now it's going to remain as is. A also got a 1959 Roosevelt dime for $1.50. Ed ANA LM-3175

I also had a similar experience with my mercs, but I bought a full album except the 1942/1 and 1916-D. If I were you I would finish it. I love the design!

I'd salvage anything decent and dump the rest. Problem is that you paid over spot... not the best deal. It's missing all the keys and semi-keys... basically the rest is worth melt except that '38-S. I'd keep the '37-S just cause it looks like it's in good shape.
Oh, and the '30-S looks nice, I'd love to buy that if you want to sell it, assuming the reverse isn't damaged. I wouldn't have paid over spot for for everything, though.

I would put this in a ziplock bag and put in the lower right bottom of the safe. ...and keep it.

either stick it away as is or finish it. I wouldn't flip anything unless you need the cash, which I assume you don't or you would not have made the purchase in the first place.

Finish and upgrade, of course!
Considering the overall quality, I don't feel you overpaid at all - I don't see any problem coins. You may wish to pop them out to make sure the reverses aren't hiding anything, but I think you done good! Sure, you could get coins cheaper, you always can, but on the whole to have such a great starter collection, I personally feel you did great.

Quote: Problem is that you paid over spot... not the best deal. FadetoBlack, I don't know what rock you've been living under but out here in my area of California it is extremely difficult to find 90% silver coin for under 20X face. The distributors aren't releasing any at all and what little you can find in the coin shops just trickles in and most of them are not letting go of it either. Bullion dealers in town are posting buy ads on CraigsList paying 16X & 17X face. I've already had a member email me asking if I would sell the set minus two pieces as is but I declined and told him if I decide to sell it he has first crack at it. I don't buy coins off of ebay. I would rather support a local honest dealer than some unknown individual on ebay who probably low-balled the person he/she bought their silver coins from. Ed ANA LM-3175

1. Take all coins out of that Folder. It is one of the old Whitman Folders where the glue in the back of the slots will eventually mess up the coins. 2. Acquire an Album for those Mercury dimes. And brand is OK although most on this forum are Dansco stuck people. Whitman, Littletone, Harris and many others make decent Albums for coins. 3. Once done, start to find the rest to make a complete collection.

I just bought a nearly full set only missing the '16-D for $150 and the later dates are all AU or BU. So in my humble opinion, you did overpay. I guess all the crazies out there in Cali are keeping prices up.
All that matters is that you are satisfied... your money, not mine.

I agree with just carl on point 1. I also think the album has glue in the holes. Some of my Great Aunt's coins were affected over the years by similar folders.

I inherited a similar album when my aunt died - as well as a bunch of others. Some I just filled out in her honor - though the coins I put in stand out as much nicer than any she had collected from change many many years ago. For those that I liked ( Buff, Walker, Peace, Merc ) I bought Intercept Shield albums and started my own in much better grades. When I upgrade in my album, the spares go in hers and knock hers into "melt tube" status - since most of hers were VG at best. Since mercs are relatively much less expensive, her merc album now is pretty good looking - and mine is really nice IMO! LOL

Gyrene: Not a very nice comment, and I agreed with FadeToBlack.
Spot is spot.
Perhaps a touch over, if you like the stuff, but that'll all.
I would also pull the 16P & 16S & check the MM's. Ya never know.

For all of you FadetoBlack's comment was rude and I don't do rude very well. Quote: your money, not mine Something you say to yourself and not put in writing on a public forum, VERY rude. The folder does not have glue in the back of the holes and the dimes have not been affected by the album. The overall condition of this set does not warrant the expense of putting them in any type of album. I will probably find comparable grade dimes to fill the empty holes and just leave it the way it is. The 1916-D hole is filled so I don't have to get that one for this album to be complete. Grammatically speaking the proper abbreviations for California is CA, Cal., or Calif., it is certainly not Cali and we may have some crazies out here in California but, they are not the ones manipulating the spot metal prices or keeping the prices up. I'm looking at getting an old album and filling it with well worn Mercs. Should be fun and I'm not gonna worry about spot, takes the joy out of collecting.
