I have been watching for awhile now the auctions on E-Bay for single Mercury dimes of all grades. I have noticed the following:

Single Mercury dime auctions are closing with bids that are higher than lets say a month even 2 months ago for the same exact year and grade. Is this because of the silver spot price and the reports of mining companies spewing out that PM suplies are very low.?

Even the low grade to junk silver merc's are selling higher than usual. I mean the melt value of a Mercury dime is 1.62 according to (124) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed but yet junk silver merc's are selling for over 4.00 in some cases(not including shipping).

I might start tracking the silver roosie's and silver Washington quarters to see if they have the same trend. I'm sure they do.

No mining companies have nothing to do with mercury prices. It could be that more people have moved away from bullion and back into more numismatic items though with the bloodbath bullion has taken in the last month or so.

As far as the junk silver ones, ebay is a great for a lot of things but not bullion and junk silver. They always seem to have a high price on there

I'm very happy to see that Mercury dimes are leaving the "junk" silver realm
and becoming more of a numismatic type coin

I am not seeing the same things that you are. I just won 2 different NGC MS65 Mercs on Monday at well below Numimedia list prices. I have however seen raw Mercs listed at well above numismatic as well as silver value and some of those have actually sold.

TPG winged liberty head dimes are abundant on the www

You should get good pricing on those

As for raw and lower grade raw; I think perhaps we might keep in mind that there are few problem free raw dimes in VF to EF and I mean truly problem free, and there are lots of collectors who are assembling VF to EF WLH sets. If you want a true problem free set in that grade range you will pay to win the bay auction. I think it's an attractive set in that range and affordable

This of course is all speculation on my part but logically makes sense to me

I have also not seen any of this at all.

I have actually stopped selling any Mercury dimes at all that didn't meet certain requirements because the prices realized were so poor that I might as well melt them down. If I get a post-34 coin, I won't even sell unless it's at least AU. 16-31 most P-mints, same thing. I won't sell any early DS unless they are minimum F-12. The only exceptions include 16-D, 21, 21-D, 26-S, and 31-D (barely). Everything else is a poor seller. Even those 5 often can't even get to greysheet ask for the grade.

hesgut: I have the same problem on Mercury dimes. If you've got a group of G-VG about the only way to get a good premium on them is to make a set out of them (those from 16-31) but then you have get some junk silver and pull out the 34-45. The stuff everyone wants and cannot find is 16-31 in XF and AU that's not cleaned. Tried to find some at my last show and I only found one worth buying . . . its a 19-D in XF.
