I thought I would post this in classic coins, thinking more Civil war experts might see it, and have a opinion

First off .. I am not happy with the hole.

I have a couple of these coins, and it seems like they would say something like "not one cent" this one is different

I am puzzled by
"Exchange Insurance Collection"
"War Claims Office"
"Ionia Mich"

Also a Name "James Kennedy" and date ... is this common for these?

Any information is welcome.

Well that's good, if you were happy about the hole we might have to start worrying about you.

I think many of the "Not one cent" tokens are found in the patriotic series, this is from the storecard series. The patriotics were anonymous pieces with patriotic or commonplace images on them that had no indication as to who had issued them. This meant that the issuer would not have to redeem them. The storecards typically have the issuers name and place of business on them. They were issued to facilitate making change, and as a form of advertising. There was always to possibility that someone would come in with a large number of their tokens and they would have to redeem them for actual money, but most never would come back allowing the person to also make a profit on the difference in cost between what he paid for the tokens, and the "face value". There are some ten thousand different varieties of store card tokens.

Interesting to think that you have a coin that is 150 years old and there is a good chance you could name someone who possessed it back then.

The article about Kennedy is great. Thanks for posting the link for it. THAT is why I collect Civil War & Merchant tokens. The history behind them is just awesome.
