The original coin posted in this thread is definitely a doubled die, and has been correctly identified as to classification - it is a class 2, distorted hub doubled die. On a scale of one to five for strength, I would give this one a three, meaning it is on the low-end of being a major doubled die.

Machine Doubling. There are no splits, the "doubling" has no relief. The "doubling" is the result of die chatter - the die bounced while the coin was being minted.
DrDon - your confusion over direction on true doubled dies may stem from you possibly having been told that on a true hub doubled die the doubling will be on one side or the other of affected letters, and not both sides. If it is on both sides, then the diagnosis is almost always
Die Deterioration Doubling and is never a doubled die.
