Lowball-Ike-PCGS-Failure
I've posted this Ike before. I bought it from a dealer's bucket for $1 because he didn't have the heart to charge me the $1.50 the bucket is marked.

I had him submit it to PCGS for me, and it came back this week "Authenticity Unverifiable." I'm tickled -- they determined it's a 1976, they determined it's a Type 1, but couldn't verify authenticity. I think the issue must be the mint mark. I'm sure it's a D mint, but since they didn't mark that on the label, they must not have been convinced that the small bump where the mint mark goes is a D mint.

I suppose it's theoretically possible it used to be a proof S coin.

Thinking about submitting to NGC now. But I don't have 4 other coins to submit with it.

I think it's an interesting coin, but I think it becomes even more of a conversation piece in a slab -- especially if it achieves PO-1 status.

It has to be the mint mark, since they essentially verified everything else.

Well, and once it occurred to me that it's possible that this was born a proof coin, there's no way to verify that mint mark. Oh well, I have a place for it in my lowball type set then.

Hard to beat that label. They verified this "unverifiable" Ike as being a 1976 Type 1...

I'd say that Unverifiable definitely makes it a special part of that type set, as one of the lowest of the lowballs.

should have been listed as "Mint unknown" not "unverifiable"

I am generally not fan of slabbed coins, but this one makes a nice conversations piece.

After a closer look, I think I see some serifs. Good catch.

HAHAHAHAHAHA

They even got the type wrong.

A close look at OF pretty much nails it.

I wonder if it was submitted as a Type 1 and since they gave it an unverified they just went with that

OK, I have to be missing something here. Don't take this the wrong way, but why would anyone waste perfectly good money to grade a boat-anchor of a coin? To try and get the lowest grade possible? Enlighten me!

My inadequate words will not suffice to fully provide the requested insight ... the pursuit of honestly circulated coins in low grade is an acquired taste and one that many of us enjoy.

For many of us ... myself included ... coins such as this low-ball Ike that have reached such a low grade are treasured as examples of coins that should not have been ... and the collecting challenge of searching for them brings us joy.

I readily admit to being a passionate low-ball collector ... for many years now I have pursued a circulated set of classic silver commemorative ... still working on it and every show I attend brings me pleasure as I continue the hunt for these rare and ... IMHO ... lovely examples of coins well served.

To the OP ... outstanding coin and despite PCGS verdict still a lovely example of an ultimate low-ball.

Ask any Morgan dollar collector...

After close study of the lettering (enlarging the picture this time), it sure looks like it.

Also, the large picture appears to show a remnant of the "D" mint mark. Which should be easier to detect in hand and raw.
