I'm just wondering as to what you guys grade this coin at. Valuation would help to and is it worth sending to TPG?

I would call her an AU 55 details. The staining of color with the stars haloed makes it look cleaned in some way. a great type coin.

Welcome aboard, newcomer!

I'll second Muddler's assessment. IMHO, the apparently unnatural surface issues, coupled with its being a relatively common date, suggest to me that it would not be worth the expense of slabbing. Being a highly detailed coin, it would look nice in a 7070 album though. I'd venture it's worth in the $100-$125 range. All-in-all, this is a desirable type coin, methinks. Why then put it in a holder that might verbally accent condition issues like cleaning?

@ExoGuy

Numismedia lists the price of a AU55 at $300. Coinstudy lists it at $310 and NGC lists at $300 ($330 if slabbed). You describe a $100-$125 value. Now if I understand you correctly what you describe is the retail price? (If its selling price then it makes sense) however does the cleaning ruin 60% value? Especially if its old cleaning on an old coin (the coin has retoned). Please advise.

Yes, that is the potential value loss for a coin which is identified as having non-original surfaces. I am not so completely convinced that it's retoning after a cleaning (Seated stuff tones oddly, sometimes), but it's still the likely outcome. That will make your coin - worth rather north of $200 in original condition - into a $125-ish coin.

Thanks for your help guys. More opinions would be appreciated. I think the grade is very fair (I wasn't expecting higher than a AU-50 Myself) but as for the valuation I'll have to consult my local coin dealer. Also I need opinion on what to make of this:

As you can see by the arrows there is a line that I believe may be a planchet error. It may have been a scratch but as you can see it goes behind her arm and touches her shoulder. Any opinions?

Hi zxcccxz: The value that I placed is based upon my years of experience, attending coin shows. I also suspect that the subject coin has been cleaned, and I took an apparent scratch into consideration. In other words, I projected a minimal, virtual wholesale value to the coin; and, not a retail price which would be higher in most coin shops, I suspect.

Here's one that I spotted on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1859-Seated...em4abfe30cdf

Personally, this one has more eye appeal to me, even though the subject coin is a stronger strike. The grades are comparable, methinks. When all is said and done, grading, eye-appeal and value are always arguable ...

If that line is raised it could be a die crack.
