If I went to a bank with silver certificates could I redeem Them for silver? That's what it says on the bottom of the note.

Those days are LONG over.
Worn silver certificates are worth face value only.

I'm sure you could go and get silver for your certificate at your bullion dealer with a ridiculous premium.
Rest in Peace

If you could go back in time...to March 1964. That's when the law changed. I think you could still redeem them up until 1969. I remember considering it but I wanted to keep my one and only silver certificate. I was only a kid and would have had to get somebody to drive me to the bank....probably wouldn't have happened.

I had 1969 in my head as the last year of redemption as well.

But the dollar is a leagal document and within the 4 corners of that document it states "One Dollar in Silver Payable to the bearer on demand." I say we file a class action suit!

June 24, 1968 was the last date for redemption of silver certificates in silver. They handed out bags of silver granules.

The law was changed to prohibit redemption beyond that date. Go ahead with your lawsuit. You will not get very far.

If your bank is like my old bank, yes. it had a display case set up inside with ASE's and other silver and gold coins. I remember begging my mom to get one of them every time we went to the bank. Anyhow, give them 30-40 silver certificates and they'll give you an ounce of silver.

Alas, an Act of Congress invalidated the redemption clause, & there's nothing you can do against that. Constitutional challenges against monetary legislation have not been entertained for a long time.
