Hi, my name is Vince and I am a storage locker auction buyer (like the storage war show but real :) )

It's a real fun hobby of mine and I am learning SOOOO much about all types of different collectables through this process.

This "error penny" coin has me stumped so I am looking for help from the experts on what I may have and what the worth may be?

This is a coin I found in a storage unit that was rented by a coin collector. It was found in a special hidden compartment of a small coin bank he had located in a curio cabinet.

As the pictures show it is in pretty good shape but there is on date on either side and both sides show the wheat side only.

Any information would be greatly appreciated and I can put my mind at ease! LOL

Thanks!

This is some sort of novelty piece. The mint's machinery does not allow a coin to be minted with double reverses (two back sides) like this one has. Sometimes they are made by whittling down two coins and cementing them together. It's a two-tailed coin so you always win coin flips!

I agree. One of their common names is a " Magician's coin".

Thank you very much for your response! I really had no idea!

Due to its prominent placement in the hidden part of the curio cabinet I wasn't really sure what to think?

The thickness of the coin is the same as a regular penny that's why I didn't think it was a "magician coin" but I trust your judgement.

Most of the coins I found were 1890 Morgan silver dollars as well as other vintage coins. I was easily able to verify those locally.

I found over $7,000 worth of coins in that curio so I figured this was worth something, but obviously not :(

Seriously thanks so much for your input! Maybe I will be able to offer something more real in the next find! Take care!

A Magicians coin is made in a lathe...with magnification you should be able to see a seam of where two sides come together. The only way a coin like that would be minted if an employee purposely did that (this is only my opinion)...Check out the coin under manification near the rim and let us know if you find anything

I will get right on that! I have a light magnification apparatus that I can focus on the zoom lens of my camera. I will get the pictures on this site no later than tomorrow

Thanks!

Welcome to Coin Community. Given the other coins you've mentioned, you might want to wander over to our Classic US coins subforum and see what you can find out about grading and variety attribution on them.

This piece may be old enough that it made from Two Cents that have been ground down flat and then put together, so be sure to check the edge well too.

Hello again!

I have taken the pictures and am leaving them here for your perusal.

I took this coin to a local coin collector and she was stumped! She could not see any ridge or other imperfection.

The plot thickens! :)
