I happened to stumble across an 1918 penny on ebay. I picked it up for $5.50 (I'd call it at least an XF).

Krause (37 ed.) has VF valued at USD$10, XF at $220, and UNC at $1,850
Is this coin worth the $40 to send in to IGC?

I'd post pics but it hasn't shown up in the mailbox yet.

Have you got a link to the coin? US grading is notoriously softer than Aussie standards. It would have to be aUNC at least by Aussie standards to warrant sending itto PCGS.

I think I might just be a little overly ambitious: I'm a small-time collector and this would be my first piece over $60

The reverse looks around fine and I would guess the obverse is very similar. There is also a bit of verdigris. Its probably worth a couple bucks up to $5 maybe. Its a harder date in higher grades but not overly scarce in average grades. Having said that its a coin worth hamging onto if you plan on collecting Aussie coins. The KGV pennies are our best coins issued IMO are what I most actively seek for my collection.
