Would you have bought this coin ?

Is it even gradable?

It was in the melt tub!

Along with a chopmarked 1815 2 reales in somewhat more readable condition.

Yep, I bought that one too.

It's probably the closest I will ever come to every boyhood coin collector's dream:
owning a piece of genuine pirate treasure.

Commentary welcome! Thanks for looking!

well...you can see the date. its not quite screaming...BUY ME. P1 detail. no idea what value to place on it but hey, if it fills a hole and you didnt pay too much for it, it'll work. I guess you need to keep in mind that there were only 123k minted so there cant be that many survivors after 200 yrs
Rest in Peace

If you only paid a few bucks for it, why not?

If you payed melt for it, you did great.
I'll be surprised if in auction it won't bring at least 25$.

Thanks, guys. "Why not" is what I thought too. Especially with silver being way down right now.
The coin weighs 5.87 gm. which is about a gram less than if it were in mint state. That's a lot of loss in service to early commerce! Silver content is the odd fineness of 0.892. With bullion price ~ $18/oz. at time of sale, it did not cost a lot. It's recognizable for the type; I did not have an example; and one of these in F or better would absolutely be on my 'Santa Claus' list. Now if only the 7070 had a space for it!

In the melt box...I would have jumped on it. Nice pick up for a bargain price.

Nice find. Some damage but the obverse has detail and the date is visible. Guessing you have an $80 coin here

I would have grabbed that in a heartbeat. That poor, abused lady needs to be retired to the gentle home of a loving numismatist who will admire her.

I wonder if that is a period hole. Looks like it might have been squared off at one time, as if a square nail was driven through it.
