Today's strange find is a 1988 LMC with a strange groove on one side. I am baffled about what could have caused this groove. Any help with this is greatly appreciated!

I can't wait to hear what this one is called. That is an awesome looking error! My guess is some type of broken collar error.

It's post-strike damage in my opinion. Not sure exactly how it was caused. Looks to have been smashed against something circular, possibly another coin. I think I can see an incused and backwards UST above IN GOD. A broken collar shouldn't have any effect on the obverse or reverse.
Rest in Peace

I agree. PMD and not an error.

I am thinking a piece of threaded pipe was used for this type of PMD

Kinda obvious that it was smashed between two round objects. You can see where the rim was damaged the objects used were round and repositioned twice.

my guess is that someone used a stack of cents to shim a piece of heavy equipment.

So it's possible for a weight great enough to smash-compress a coin will leave readable lettering behind? Honest question - I can see the remaining part of the letters on much of AMERICA.

I could easily see this as having shimmed something, otherwise.

With a vise you can make a full mirror transfer. Probably Three Cents were stack between a couple of pieces of wood and hit with a hammer. PSD

I think if you used coins there would have been a lot of design transfer which is not present. I'm thinking more like between two pieces of pipe.
