Hey Coincommunity, First post here, Took my iPod and an ios app, Sound View(.99$), to the local coin shop & did some ring testing on their mixed '67 bags of quarters & dimes, looking for discounted silver. -First calibrate pre '66 quarter 80% below -Next is non magnetic '68 quarter 50% silver below The lower density of the lower silver content coins shifts the frequencies higher. Dimes can be separated too. Below is an 80% '66 dime's signature And now a 50% '68 dime below Hope this helps anyone find the more desirable 80 coins.

Dude! So did you do some sorting? How consistent was the test when repeated with a few samples?

yeah, but no buyer is going to be convinced. Smelting them into recognized bars is the only way to get their silver value optimized.

The only way to make money is to scam.
Buy quantities of 1967 junk. Separate. Refine the 80% Resell the 50% as 65%

Yeah, it's more likely a buyer will be convinced a 50% Centennial coin is a poor buy rather than a similar 80% coin, a good deal.
That said, it's a fun app that works well & also sorts old, worn 'dateless' George V dimes(or quarters) as either .925 or .800

Superstacks, interesting graphs. How many 50% and 80% 67 quarters and dimes did you find in one bag? Did you find more 80% than 50%? If so, the dimes or the quarters? Would be interesting to find some kind of consistent ratio... might vary with dealer/location. Of course, if enough collectors were to sort these, the ratio might change over time....? Would require a great deal of patience, I imagine...

The majority are 50% silver based on my limited exposure. If we presume the bobcats' mintage was almost evenly divided as the mackerel dimes are reported, one might consider several possibilities why the 80% are less common,
-Specimen sets of centennial coins were produced early in the year. These coins are still in their sets or are in great shape & never find their way into junk bins.
-Collectors have been at it for a few years after release of YouTube video "Identifying 50% and 80% silver quarters".
-Fewer 80% bobcats & mackerels were minted in the first place.
Specific Gravity of 80% coin is 10.096 grams/ cm3 with 50% coins @ 9.648 g/cm3. Will confirm if this ring test works, someday, if a ever get a .01 accurate scale. Till then, I'll be sneaky, cause the shop now wants to charge pre-67 prices for bobcat quarters that I've sorted. The nerve...
