The coin slot looked big enough the first time I saw it and did not have a half on me. Now today, I took my "guinea pig half" and tried it and it did not fit in the coin slot. Oh well... Edited by Fox 07/01/2013 9:54 pm

I've never seen one, but I'm in Idaho. Should be seeing them by 2016.

I don't understand why they haven't just phased out the halves and dollar coins honestly. When people started mass-hoarding halves for their silver content they gradually disappeared from circulation and the market adapted by using quarters for everything instead. The mint tried in vain several times to get halves back into circulation but people had just become accustomed to using quarters and the halves never really caught on again.

Quote: I don't understand why they haven't just phased out the halves and dollar coins notes honestly. I fixed it for you. The half dollars have technically been phased out, being NIFC since 2002. The one dollar note should be eliminated in favour of the more cost effective one dollar coin.

I would be okay with that if they re-introduced $2 bills. I don't want to be getting back 3 or 4 dollar coins as change (or 9 when the clerk doesn't have a $5 bill!) I don't understand why they still produce half dollar coins if they are "not intended for circulation." Why are they wasting our tax dollars to produce coins that aren't really going to get used? I doubt collectors are ordering recent year Kennedy halves for a premium over face value... am I wrong?

I use $2 bills. You just have to ask for them at the bank. They don't normally hand them out without asking because people don't use them.

I know you can get them but if you have to ask for them it defeats the purpose, and I am more concerned about what I receive back in change. My whole point is if they eliminated dollar bills without doing something to get $2 bills back into circulation, you would end up getting a crapload of dollar coins a lot of times.
As a simple example, how would cashiers stock them? What slot would they go into in the cash register? If you start telling people to keep more than one bill type in the same slot, they will make costly errors or just pretend they ran out of one bill because they are tired of picking up one stack of bills to get to the other denomination underneath. Cash registers would need to be changed out for ones with an additional slot, in many cases. That's not realistically going to happen as business owners tend to be cheap about things viewed as unnecessary expenses.

Collectors buy them in mint sets, proof sets, they get put in random other sets, bags rolls ect. They all sell for over face value, and their cost to make is less than their face value. Dollar coins didnt lose tax dollars either, they made money because their cost of production was lower than face value. As long as they sell enough to recoup production costs they can justify keeping them going. With all things considered I would be shocked if they werent making money on them. But I do agree, the half is dead for circulation and isn't coming back.

Actually, with the exception of the cent and nickels minted for circulation (which need to be eliminated yesterday), everything the mint produces earns the US Government a profit.

Foxwoods Man, Gee, if the half is so "dead" as far as circulation goes, then why did the people at most (all?) Walmart stores have their self checkout machines configured to accept halves? If halves were "dead to circulation" and are noy coming back, then, why waste the time to add that feature to the machines? If what you (and every one else who says the half is dead)are right in your words, the Walmart stores might as well have had an Ike dollar Coin tube put in the machines to accept Ikes as well. But they didn't, because the Ike is an "obsolete" coin. The Kennedy half is NOT. Just read the subject line of this forum "Mondern U.S. Coins" It lists both Kennedy AND Franklin halves as "current denominations" It of course, also lists the obsolete Ike and Susan B. Anthony dollar Coins as current coinage, but those, ALONG with Franklin halves are obsolete, and would be more likely hoarded than spent. Especilly the coins with silver in them, such as the Franklin halves and 1964-1970 Kennedy halves. Copper clad Kennedy halves are a current, circulating denomination, even though they are not minted for circulation anymore. They are only not being minted for circulation now, because they currently have enough halves to supply the current demand right now. One person, whose name escapes me at the moment, even went so far as to say that "Halves circulate MORE than $2 bills, because more people think $2 bills are fake, than they do, halves"

So true, so true. Actually even attempting to spend those baby sized dollar coins at times is fun. $2 bills could get you almost arrested since no one sees them. Spending a half dollar still usually gets accepted but also some strange looks as if is this real? Don't worry about what is and what isn't accepted at Walmart. I've been watching my spending and realized I haven't spent any currency or coins in almost a Month. I use my credit card almost exclusively now. I get nothing when I use cash, but get money back from the credit card comapany. Why use cash?

Fox, it seems like the whole of your thesis is that because Wal-mart thinks halves are still in circulation, they are still in circulation. Not a very strong argument... the bottom line is I think everyone can agree that with a few rare exceptions, you just don't see them being actively used in commerce anymore.

Quote: Just read the subject line of this forum "Mondern U.S. Coins" It lists both Kennedy AND Franklin halves as "current denominations" There is no mention that the US Modern Coins forums are for "current denominations." The division between classic and modern is simple (although unofficial). Classic US coins depict Liberty or another anonymous effigy (the use of living models does not count, as they are still intended to represent Liberty). Modern US coins depict real people (with exception to the Eagle bullion coins).

I remember a change machine when I was attending a technical school back in the 1980's that took half dollars. I still use the Kennedy's, Dollar coins of all types and Two Dollar Bills whenever I can get my hands on them from the bank. They are usually glad to get rid of them.
