Hello,
I am looking into the change in the dies during 1982 for the Jefferson nickels.
In my club there has been a lot of conversations but yet no full answer about when the new dies were started or how many of each were used.
Basically the talk is that there are 2 obverse dies and 2 reverse dies used at the mint that year for the nickels.
The first obverse die was used from 1971 or 1977 till 1981 the second obverse die was started sometime in 1982.
I wanted to know if it started the year as the working hub/die or did it start at some point latter on. The second option would mean that there are indeed 2 obverse dies used that year.
On the issue of the reverse dies I have a copy of both reverse dies matted with 1982 obverse dies in my possession. Again it would be a die used from 1971 or 1977 till 1981 and a die issued in 1982.
Can anyone tell me if booth dies were used at all 3 mints as reported in 1982/1983? Also can you tell me what month the dies went from the early 1981 type to the latter 1982 type?

This has been a debate my coin club has wrestled with for sometime and I would like to finally get the true facts on these dies. Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated up to and including redirecting me to another person or additional notes that you may have on this subject.

Thank You for your time and Help

Make that hubs and not dies. They use hundred if not thousands of dies each year.

They modified the hubs in 1977 and that hub was used until some time in 1982. Then the new modified 1982 hub was put into use. I don't know when during the year the change over was made but it was NOT at the beginning of the year. And both the old and new hubs were used at all three mints. The proofs switched hubs in June of 82. Breen only lists two types of 82 S nickels, one with obv/rev of the old hub and one with the new obv/rev hubs. I think there may be some crossover pieces as well with old/new and new/old combinations as well. The Philadelphia and Denver mints both come with all four combinations old/old, old/new, new/old, and new/new. Dwight Stucky did some research on availability of the different varieties. For P the majority are new/new. Next most common were the old/old but it was only about .1% of the mintage from his search results (20 found in a search of 20,000 coins). The old/new and new/old are supposed to be even scarcer (Less than 20 of the old/new and 10 of the new/old found in 20,000). I don't have rarity figures on the Denver issues.

If I knew anything about them I'd have commented over there.

The biggest problem with these really is that strikes are pretty bad on most examples so it can be tough to tell just what you have unless your specimen is choice. There's a huge difference in their appearances but there's an equally big difference between nicely made specimens and poorly made ones.

They're all tough in nice condition. Nagengast has a few paragraphs about these in "The Jefferson nickel Analyst" but it's not extremely helpful. The best bet is to get out and look at the coins (if you can find them).

I discovered these very early and they were reported by 1984 in the numismatic press but still I neglected to set aside very many or to study them carefully. In those days I was much busier trying to find nice dimes and quarters, unfortunately.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
