I picked up this set in a dealer's junk bin in the UK for about £2 (US$3). It has the five coins from the Lincoln Cent to the Kennedy half (no Ike dollar) plus a bronze medallion. My Krause catalogue lists the US mint set of 1977 as having a mintage of 2,006,869, with a dollar coin, so I assume this set is something different? Please could anyone tell me if this is an official mint set, what the mintage was and if it has any value? Thanks!

This is a souvenir set, sold at the Philadelphia mint gift shop.

The regular mint set has two cell packages, one from Philadelphia
and one from Denver

According to the RedBook, it's not an official isue and the value is just the sum of the value of the individual coins. I'd say just leave it in the package anyway.

Actually it is an official issue and they do tend to bring a premium. Not a large premium but more than just the value of the individual coins. The souvenir sets are not easy to find and mintages range from a low of around 400 in 1972 to as high as 10,000 to 20,000 for the 1983 sets. Most years are under 5,000 sets.

Thanks Conder101. Do you happen to know the mintage for the 1977 set, please?

And are these sets still being issued?

Thanks! :-)

Good luck finding mintages. Confirming them is even more improbable. The sets were made through 1998 and these later ones have been reported to have some substantial mintages but this isn't consistent with what is seen in the market;

I'd guess the mintage of the '77-P to be somewhat lower than most, perhaps in the 8,000 range.

I might add that your set appears to be extremely choice by the photo. These coins are plucked right off the assembly line and are not mint set quality. Really nice souvenir sets of any date are pretty tough.

There is a high attrition on the sets because demand is thin and dealers can get a dollar or two just for the medal. There is demand for individual coins so these often get used in collections.

Thanks cladking. Looks like I made quite a good buy. I'll definitely keep the set complete. You are right - the coins are in nice choice brilliant uncirculated condition - I had assumed it was a specimen set.

I really appreciate all this information - I've had the set for a couple of years and have never seen any others like it.
