I'm very fond of this coin, which I've had for many years. Although the obverse is unremarkable ...

... the reverse seems pretty special.

Any thoughts on grading and description? I suppose the obverse may have been cleaned, though I'm not at all sure.

Also, I don't know where to find info on the Overton varieties. I think this would be generally be called large O, normal letters. But the date digits are angled differently, I think.

Welcome to the CCF!

Nice Bustie. Can you take pics straight on with no angle? This will make attribution much easier.

Based on the low 3 in the date and slanted crossbars on the shield I will say O-115. Wait for others though as I've been wrong before.

I can't help with the attribution, but the grade I would say looks VF25 and the color appears to be from an old album where the reverse was in contact with sulphur paper causing the nice album toning. Very pretty and looks original, toning color most likely from an old Wyatt Raymond or National Coin album.

Thanks all! I've always enjoyed this coin. I sold most of my collection 40 years ago, but I couldn't part with this one.

I've been trying to find out more about the Overton varieties, but the book behind it all is apparently out of print even though everyone seems to refer to them. Any suggestions on how I might learn more?

Looks like you need the book by Al C. Overton - Bust Half Fever. They pop up on ebay often priced around $50-80 for a copy in very good condition.
