Doesn't look as good in hand as the pictures on ebay! However, the bottom of the 8 in the date looks like it could be repunched like N27. On N-27, the 1 in the date is also repunched at the base, but this one just looks like PMD to me. Can't tell through all the dirt anyway.

thoughts?

Defintely a recut date or RPD. that is a scratch in the lower loop of the 8, probably done when another owner was trying to remove the verdigris at the date. So yes it is both RPD and PMD.

This is most likely an N-4. Repunching on this variety shows under both 1 and 8. This IS NOT PMD under 1 and 8.

N-4 and N-27 have the same obverse die, but the N-4 die is earlier while the N-27 is later. My reverse die looks more like N27.

Yes, you are correct about 4 and 27. I defaulted to the 4 because I couldn't see any of the reverse 27 markers. Just out of curiosity, what marker do you see on the reverse that points you to 27?

I actually see a lack of markers on the reverse. My book says a lack of markers is very rare on the N4 but Common on N27.

I'd like to add that I agree, not PMD. That's off the die.

I was looking for a lump on the rim left of you to go with 27 and didn't see one but in this condition it may not be visible. I'll go with 27 then. Good eye.

On my above post it should read left of "U" in United, not left of you. This website has a weird spelling check.

I may not have been clear enough the date has only the minor issue with the scratch in the lower loop of the 8 not from the recut date or mint - but done through a carless cleaning at one point.

The date is definitely repunched and really cool! The doubling on the 4 is even evident in the close up photo -that part is for sure mint produced. I really like this coin, but that little scratch shows why if trying to remove gunk in areas like the date, one should use only very soft rose thorns or tooth picks and not a metal or similar hard pointy object. The scratch is so small it shouldn't affect the coin much at all.
