On one of those coupon websites I found a code to get all of the U.S. State Quarters, Territories, and the 2010-2012 National Parks for $0.25/each and a set of the 2009 Lincoln Pennies. Total price is about $18 if you take off the folder. I feel almost like I'm cheating as a coin collector if I purchase a complete set in one shot. I guess it's because these are all circulating coins. I don't mind purchasing commemorative, non-circulating coins like American Silver Eagles though. Anyone else ever feel this way about their coin collecting? Is it really collecting if you buy, instead of find, your coins?

Collecting can be done how ever you like many collectors dont even roll hunt at all they just buy things !! as for the quarters think to yourself do you want all used quarters that you will never be completely happy with or do you want very nice ones in Ms 65 and up that will go up in value more and look better then circulated coins !! in the end the choice is up to you and isn't us to decid I can tell you roll hunting is a blast though and all the coins are still very much out their !! Good Luck Sean H

I have a couple sets of 1999 and up quarters that I pulled from circulation and bank roll searching. It's a lot of fun discovering the randomly elusive ones.
However, I also signed up for that offer you mentioned so that I could have an uncirculated set. I don't mix my collections. The MS are in one folder and the circulated in the others. Also, if you want both P & D, don't get the folder they have as it is year only. Get Whitman #8078. It has both P & D in one book. They also have a book for park quarters.
If you want both P & D from the offer, get both the 66 and 71 coin offer. I did this and was able to make a P & D set less 26 coins. YMMV. I created a swap thread for the rest. Link is in my signature below.

I've had that discussion with myself a few times, and in a perfect world, I suppose, I'd prefer to put a set together from circulation. But the truth of the matter is you have to deal with the law of diminishing returns. What's your time/money worth? You can CRH all you want but the likelihood of putting together a complete set of LWC (for example) out of rolls is miniscule, especially considering there are people like me out there doing the same thing. Realistically you're not going to be able to complete any set without purchasing some coins specifically. And sometimes it just makes sense (ahem) to purchase a lot. I did that a couple of times for the proof versions of LMCs and Jeff nickels to fill my Dansco holes -- there was no chance of me ever coming upon them in the wild and it made much better financial sense to purchase them together from a guy who cut up mint sets. Collecting is what you decide it is. If you buy a pre-filled Dansco, well, that's your choice. And, just because you do that, doesn't mean you can't build another. And then there are the older coins that don't circulate any more -- auctions, coin shows, ebay, coin stores, etc. are the only way to get them. That offer you speak of sounds like a Littleton offer. They're ok for what they are but they'll try to get you signed up for a subscription.

I use the "how much is my time worth" logic for decisions like yard work, or fixing the car. However, the time spent looking at coins, when the rest of the world's drama is beyond the view of my eye loop, is invaluable.

@OldSkool, I never said I was going to listen to my own logic. :) I still enjoy cracking a box of [whatever] and whittling through it, even if it doesn't fill a hole in one of my folders.
Again, collecting is a very personal thing.

I have 2 sets of State Quarters. One from circulation in a big USA map that my mother bought for me when the series started (I was 13 at the time and it was SO COOL) and one from littleton. I am doing the same for ATB Quarters and whatever else they decide to issue. I hope you enjoy your purchase :)

I have three Littleton Statehood Quarter folders, and three National Park folders. They are green Date-only folders filled with "D" Quarters that I received in change from retail transactions. Two Territorial folders as well, D's from circulation and the P's were traded for. Since I have received a whopping seven P-mint ATB Quarters in change since Jan. 2010 , I keep those inside one of my ATB folders, in individual 2×2's. "Worth only face value" is not a big issue when you got all the coins for face value in the first place... I consider circulation finds to be the 'soul' of the hobby, which is why I love to keep these humble green folders along with the "good stuff". ;) PS: Even my Dansco 7146 (containing all the 1999-2009 Clad Proof Quarters) has four "bonus" impaired Clad Proof State Quarters that I received in change.

UPDATE: I received my quarters today & I love them! Sure, the uncirculated aren't mint/proof but they are mostly better than what I find in my change from local stores. Next, to take the time to put them in 2x2 and organize them.

Good choice. The 2010, 2011, and 2012 had relatively low mintage so they might be worth a decent amount - eventually. I got both so that I had a better chance of getting both P & D.

I believe in finding by over buying coins by a ratio of 75%-25%. I go through my change with every transaction to make sure I find a hidden treasure just given to me. This drives my wife nuts because she thinks that the clerks are afraid I wasn't given the correct change. When I travel, I go to local banks and buy rolls of coins to pick through later. I also have a friend on the opposite side of the country, that buys & sends coin rolls. As a last and easy resort I will buy coins from ebay. I had only came across one single 2009 U.S. territory quarter in circulation last was in real bad condition. So I bought the 2009 D&P territory set to complete my State Quarter album.
