I wanted to pick up a 2012 silver proof set until I noticed the prices. Why so high? Is this something that always happens a year after they come out and then the price drops down again? Or is there something about the 2012 sets I'm not aware of?

All the 2012 products have a premium right now that may or may not hold because their sales was unexpectedly ended instead of still being available for the following year like they have in years past

Low mintage numbers for the silver Kennedy half.

Did they issue significantly less of these than in years past? Is this going to be like 1999 where the price just stays high?

Last year, I told my neighbor who always buys proof sets the year they come out, that he'd be better off waiting a few years for the value to drop below issue price. Hope he bought his 2012 set before listening to my bad advice.

There ended up being less than expected from the sales cut off. My guess would be that the price will be higher but will probably come down some as the shock of what happened wears off

Yeah, I don't recall anything particularly special about the '12 Ag proof set besides the early sales cutoff. Anyone have the final numbers? I'm sure they're out there.

In my house burglary of Dec 2012, thieves made off with both of my '12 proof sets, but left the '12 Ag proof sets. The rest of my sets were locked away, but I hadn't gotten around to stowing those few. Bugger. Oh well - at least they stole the proof and not the Ag proof.

edit: just did a quick search and found (although I only found one site that had any recent numbers (proofsetguide), so not sure how reliable this is; can't find any data on the US Mint site itself or anywhere else):

2012 Proof: 794,002 (lowest since 1956)
2012 Ag Pf: 395,443 (lowest since....ever)

And how many of these sets have already been broken?

2012 Clad Proof Sets also carry a high premium, in fact at a higher gain from their issue price than the 2012 Silver Sets.

Several of the 2012 sets sold out early - including the silver proof set. The standard uncirculated set is selling for a nice premium as well, since it sold out unexpectedly. I am hoping the mint is starting to realize this adds value to the collectors, which is what the numistic coins they produce is supposed to be about.

The 1999 silver set has come down quite a bit in price and can be gotten at a much better price than it could just a couple of years ago.

edit: should have said 1999 silver set (not 2009 as it had previously)

Many of the 2012 products are considered keys or semi-keys for now, will have to wait how the 2013 items closes at, there could be new lows there, this trend has been continuing since 2009. Every year lower than the last. The prices for the 2012 silver set isn't going to come down anytime soon, the silver dime/half are at lows and this perception extended to the presidential and Native American dollars as well. None of my usual sellers are cutting up any of the 2012s for sale as individual coins, but are still breaking up the 2000-2011 sets. There are an abundant supply of intact 2012 proof sets, that will be broken up when the prices drop. If you missed out getting a set from the Mint, I would definitely wait unless you have an urgent reason to purchase at such inflated prices. Even at 395-450K mintage of the dime/half, it is in no sense rare. For my $150, I'd rather get the SF or WP ASE sets, IMO.

400,000? That is low. About a 20% drop.

Maybe I'll buy two 2013 sets so I have one to trade for a 2012 set later.

When citing the 2012 Silver JFK and Dime 'keys', don't forget that 50,169 more of each are in the 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Sets.

Yes, I said 50,169. Mint Stats

So 445,612 (each) of those, still pretty low.

Ironically, the 2012 Silver Proof Quarters Set is still available...

Was at my LCS today. Grey sheet on this set is now $140. I predict that by the end of the year, these will be selling for $200. I picked up two a short time ago. Also picked up the limited edition set, although I don't think that one will do as well.

Quite a hefty premium for the Silver Proof Set's two "unique" coins (the Silver Proof Dime and JFK), which are also in the Limited Set.

Most ironically, the 2012 Silver Quarters Set has now dropped to $31.95 (and I've ordered a few more of those!).

If I was buying 2012 Proof Sets now (at the present secondary market premiums), I'd get a Clad Set and a Limited Set (this would give you all the Proof coins). I don't think the 2012 Sets will hit $200 by the end of this year, but then again I didn't think they'd go past $100 Greysheet this year, either...

Time will tell. When I was at the Baltimore show, there were NONE to be found. They really are in short supply.

It is interesting that the 2012 silver ATB set is still not sold out.

My thoughts: I really would not get in a hurry to buy a 2012 set. Remember that historically Proof Sets bomb. They're are like 4th of July fireworks. They go up have a big BANG and then they go down. We've seen the 1986 set, the clad and silver sets from 1999 that were like that three to even five years after they were issued and then the whammies came and beat them with a full court press. Of and remember the 1987 set. Yes that's the one that people thought that would be golden cause it was a repeat of 1970 and that one well in Hollywood they have a saying for a movie that's the mirror image of the Oscars ---- It's Turkey Time!

In January, I bought all the items in this picture for $200 cash. At the time, I thought I had overpaid a bit...

2012-Silver-Proof-Set-Prices--Why-So-High?[/URL]

Latest CDN says if I sold this pair of 2012 Sets, I'd make my $200 back and a little extra.

Which would make those Proof State Quarters (now residing in my Dansco 7146) free, for all practical purposes...
