Hey. While visiting a friend and helping him look through his old boxes I discovered a roll of 1964 nickels with a $2 face (40pieces). They seem to be BU and I exchanged em for $2. Now I'm no expert on BU rolls, so what kind of value am I looking at? Any help is appreciated. Thanks. Its a brown roll that reads:
$2 NICKELS Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce

You might get between $12 to $20 - depending on the buyer.... I sold a BU "shotgun" roll of 1966 5-cents at Coin Expo for $16...

Thanks for the help guys. I am looking to trade this roll rather than sell it. What could I expect then? Since a coin dealer can take the coins out and sell them for $1-$5 each depending on the grade. Is it better that I contact my local coin dealer directly or attend a coin show?

Agree with SPP up there ^. Nice find but fetch betwen 12-15 dollar maybe little more. I bought one at coin show for 12 bucks and opened it up and look for XWL. Then the find really pays off

I agree it is a nice find at face value. The roll itself to the right buyer could go for $12 to $20 as SPP-Ottawa already mentioned.
If you were to break the roll up, you could get an average of $2.50 a nickel (depending on grade) if there are no XWL. However it would be a slow processes to move 40 BU 64 nickels.
Trade value would really depend on if the dealer or fellow collector is looking for 64 BU nickels.
In the end you paid $2.00 for the roll so anything above that in trade or selling you are still going to come out ahead.

You mentioned that I might get an average of 2.50 a nickel. So that would mean $100 for them all? So then why could I expect just $12-$20 if I sold it as a whole? Anyways I'm going to go through it and look for the any extra water line's. I'll repost if I find any.

Unfortunately I didn't find any extra water line's. I did, however, find 2 "spitting queens". What could I expect for those? One seems to be in MS-61, the other in MS-63. I will contact my local coin dealer and see what he has to say. Thanks for the all the help.

Quote: You mentioned that I might get an average of 2.50 a nickel. So that would mean $100 for them all? That's correct. It may take you a year or two to sell 40 coins individually. Most of the time groups of coins, coin sets, rolls etc. will bring you a much better return if sold separately but it can also take a long time to sell all the coins individually. Here's a true example. I purchased a roll of 2003P Magnetic (CPS) Old Effigy pennies for $5.00. I paid $4.50 above face value. I broke up the roll, searched through it and am now selling the individually pennies for $4.75 each. I offer free shipping so once you take off the shipping costs, ebay fees, PayPal fees it works out to approx. $3.00 per penny. Now some of the pennies were toned or scratched so I finished with 37 nice MS pennies. 37 X $3.00 = $111.00 is the profit off a $5.00 roll of pennies. Now the trick is you have to be extremely patient as it may take me a couple of years to sell them all. It is very time consuming and it you are in no hurry to make some money from your roll of nickels, selling them individually for a couple of dollars each will bring you a far greater return than selling them as a roll. But after that being said, you scored on 2 spitting queens so I wouldn't worry about the rest of them. Depending on the grade are looking at $50- $250 each. Carson3333 was a little high.

Wow $4.75 for a 2003P is a little steep lol. I sell a set of 2000-2012 pennies for $15 shipped, maybe I should up my price a little ;).

I've sold 12 coins thus far at that price so still have a long way to go before they are all gone. Don't want to get off topic, but in all my experience with ebay, selling singles is the way to go. I've done year sets in the past for pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and loonies and I just didn't find it worth my time. I had several people email asking me for a single coin as it was the only one they needed for their collection. Through trial and error I've found that a buyer will pay $2.00 to $5.00 for one single coin to fill a hole before they will buy a set even at a much cheaper price as they don't want all the other coins.

@lesin Thanks a lot. I'm not really very happy with the idea of selling anything on ebay. I think I will go to the 4 coin dealers in my town and sell them 10 coins each. I'll see what I can get.
