When I was growing up, I always referred to Kennedy half dollars as "50-cent pieces". And I always heard other people refer to them this way, including my dad and grandpa. I was wondering if anyone else did this. The other day I was talking about coins with a co-worker, and I actually referred to them as 50-cent pieces like I used to do. This is what got me thinking about this. To me, it seems that " Kennedy half dollar" is the proper term for the coin as far as numismatics is concerned while "50-cent piece" is a generic/general term used in casual, non-numismatic conversation. That's just my observation, though.

What does it say on the reverse? I generally prefer the "half dollar" moniker, but I have used the "fifty-cent piece" term as well.

I know someone was going to say it. I did not know that someone would be you.

Given that a dime [disme] is 1/10, and a quarter is ... 1/4 of a dollar the half dollar is logical. But that doesn't make it the rule.
In decimal, it is .10, .25 and .50.

In Canada most people I've noticed (including myself) refer to canadian "50 cent pieces" as "50 cent pieces" and US "half dollars" as "Half Dollars" or "Halfs". Most likely because that's whats on each coin.

Half a buck would still be #12 on the all-time CCF postcount listing.

In the 'States, you have 'half dollars', or simply 'halves'. In Australia, we have '50 cent pieces'. They are in common and heavily used circulation.
I prefer the American term for this denomination.

I call them halves (and other denominations the halve-nots.. jk) or half-dollars; almost never 50 cent pieces.

I've always called them half dollars.
A few years back when I was spending some, a cashier asked me "are these the fifty cent quarters?" I figured it was easier to say yes, and to let it go at that.

We "should" be calling them a "half", or "halves" for plural. We don't go around calling qiarters "25 cent pieces" or even "quarter dollars" and we don't call dollar coins "whole dollars" although I have head the term "dollar piece" for the dollar coin before, but that was over a decade ago or so. So, why call the 50 cent denomination a "50 cent piece" or even a half "dollar", when simply, "half" or "halves" should do?
