At the annual coin & stamp show here in Brisbane, Australia this weekend (yes, a city of over 1.8 million people and it only has 1 coin show a year! ) and I saw two slabbed coins for sale. They were an Australian penny and halfpenny, slabbed by NGC I think. Out of 32 coin dealers at the show, these were the only slabs on offer. One of the local dot-com dealers was selling them. I've never seen slabs for sale here before. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Here is a link to a coin store in Winnipeg, Manitoba up here. They have these Aussie Graded coins on auction. I buy from here all the time and haven't been dissappointed yet. http://auction.gatewestcoin.com/cgi...ub=AustraliaThe graded coins are at the bottom of the page. Andrew

Bummer. Sorry to hear the bad news. Go figure, some people just like the look and feel of real plastic. The next phase is the endless cracking out, dipping and resubmitting game so that all the classic silver coins end up blast white shiny and full of hairlines. Bird flu, SARS or flesh-eating bacteria would be better than this plague coming to your shores.

I was like you Sap, hadn't seen one before. Managed to get one from Emu auctions a little while back, an American coin. Have one now, studied it, put it away, probably won't get another.

Sorry my last post here was a little over the top. I just think the whole slab thing has gotten out-of-hand, especially when people begin to think that there has to be something wrong with a coin if it isn't in a slab.

I tend to agree with you about slabs, t360. I don't have any and don't really want any. If I acquired coins in slabs, I might keep one or two as a demonstration of what they were, but I'd want to crack out any coins I actually wanted for my collection. I have to say that the link pattiewhack posted doesn't enthuse me about slabbing too much, either. There's a George V florin graded AU-50 by PCGS - judging by the pics, it would be lucky to grade above gVF from any dealer sticking to the ANDA grading standard.

I always wondered what FDC stood for. Thanks Sap!

Aw Shucks. When you said "Aussie Graded coins " I thought they would be coins graded by an Australian service (Of which there have only been two, possibly three companies). You meant Graded Aussie coins.

Not too over the top at all, t360. The coin grading game is way out of hand here and I have to agree that if these are the boom times for TPGs then bust times will surely follow. They will have no one to blame but themselves when collectors stop worrying about the quality of the plastic and start worrying about the quality of the metal (coin, that is). When, oh when will this start (soon, I hope).

there was a post on another thread on this site speculating that a certain coin would appreciate in value based on the black slab it was in, only used one month or something like that...seems the difference in the slab made the coin hundreds of dollars higher...go figure.
one follow up comment was now we will have to look for counterfeit slabs!

Well when you think about the cost of minimum of say $ 15.00 per coin with shipping am also not sure if it is worth adding that cost to your coin.
I guess it all depends on what you like me I have way to many coins to ever think about slabbing them all.
I may yet send out some of my 2006 $50.00 gold buffalo proofs to get graded as I feel I can justify that cost.

I have heard minimum $200 expected value as the number to justify the cost of TPG?
