Hi Again CCF,

Although I have a beautiful collection of proof Three Cent Nickels that I'm working on, I feel the need to branch out a bit into some other territory. I was thinking about getting a draped bust half dollar type piece, but on the other hand, I was thinking about buying some semi-keys in some 20th Century/19th century sets. I have a limited budget that I am trying to balance between my main collection (collecting only in PR65 or Up) and some other little pieces. Let me know if you have any advice/ideas.

Thanks!

I don't know if I'd call anything in numismatics "undervalued," since if the prices are low it's because people don't want to pay bigger prices. So if you want to branch out, best to acquire stuff that appeals to you personally.

Seeing how you're already familiar with the series, why not a PF 3c silver Var. 3?
That would keep costs down, abit.

You could try a type set. I am having a ton of fun, and it allows you to experiment with a bunch of different designs and denominations to see which ones you like the best.

I think 2 and 3 cent coins are undervalued as collector items. Walking Liberty half dollars also seem to be attainable (mostly).

Proof 3 Cent nickels are an awesome things to collect, IMO. I would continue with those.

I also like the idea of a US Type Set (7070 type). IMO, very rewarding and easy to get started.

Good luck!

I agree.

The only issue, being able to find a 7070.

I started a 7070 a while back, but for some reason I just didnt feel goal oriented getting different pieces of different series. I love classic stuff over modern stuff.

Get one of each grade professional TPG certified Flying Eagle cent, starting from AG-3 up to MS-something! I think I have three VF ones, but you could do better! And worse. And the same!!

SsssHhhhh! I'm not done buying them all yet Moe!

I aplaud your sticking to a series you know well, and improve your collection at. Type sets are fun, and yes (gulp) the 2¢ series can be a realatively inexpensive set to collect with the exception of the Small Motto, 1872 in business strikes and the proof only 1873 (2 types). A proof collection of them would get expensive and tough to complete.

Shield nickels are another fun set to try.

What about going for a complete 3cn set including the business strikes since you are already partially there now?

Liberty nickels might fit the bill in Proof as well.

You won't loose money by getting top quality coins or key dates in high grades in the long run.

Get a coin book that shows most of the coins. Then just look through it until you find something you like. Taking advise from others as to what you should collect usually doesn't work well. So few have the same interests.

Advice on Bust . . . Dimes and Quarters are generally much scarcer than Halves the latter of which tended to sit in banks. The Half Dimes I'd put between the Dimes & Quarters not as scarce as them in terms of finding nice no problem coins as shows but harder to find than the Half Dollars. With all the Bust coins as a general rule unless the coin is rare die variety the scarcer dates will be any year before Andrew Jackson took office as America's President in 1829.

It shocked me when you said you have proof Three Cent Nickels! I was going to recommend a very undervalued coin and that is the 1882 uncirculated Three Cent Nickel. With a mintage of only 10,609 and retailing for $480, it seems like a bargain if you can ever find one.
